    1

    Open the PDF in Preview

    ~15s
Double-click the PDF file on your Mac to open it in Preview. If it opens in another app, right-click the file, choose Open With, and select Preview.
    2

    Open the Markup Toolbar

    ~15s
Click the small pencil or marker icon near the top of the Preview window to open the Markup toolbar. This reveals all the annotation and signature tools.
    3

    Click the Signature Button

    ~15s
In the Markup toolbar, click the signature button — it looks like a cursive letter with a line underneath it. A dropdown will appear showing any saved signatures. If this is your first time, you will see options to create a new signature.
    4

    Create Your Signature

    ~30s
Choose one of three methods: Trackpad — tap "Click Here to Begin" and draw your signature with your finger on the trackpad, then press any key when done. Camera — sign your name on a white piece of paper, hold it up to your Mac camera, and Preview will trace it. Type — click the Type tab and type your name; choose the handwriting font you prefer.

    Quick Tip

Quick Tip: The trackpad method works best if you use a slow, deliberate stroke. Preview saves your signature for future use, so you only need to do this once.

Place the Signature on the Document

    ~16s
After saving your signature, click on it in the dropdown list. It will appear in the middle of the PDF page. Click and drag it to the correct signature line on the form. You can also drag the corners to make it larger or smaller.
    6

    Save the Signed PDF

    ~23s
Press Command + S to save the signed document. The signature is now embedded in the PDF. You can email this file, attach it to an online form, or upload it wherever it needs to go.

    Warning

Once saved, the signature is part of the document. If you need to remove or reposition it later, open the file and click the signature to select it, then press Delete before saving again.

Signing a document used to mean printing it out, signing it with a pen, and then scanning it back in. On a Mac, you can skip all of that. The Preview app — which comes installed on every Mac — has a built-in signature tool that lets you sign PDFs in seconds.

You can create a signature in three different ways. You can draw it on your trackpad using your finger, you can hold a signed piece of paper up to your Mac's camera and Preview will capture it, or you can type your name and choose a handwriting-style font. Once you create a signature, Preview saves it so you can use it again on future documents without re-drawing it.

After you place your signature on the PDF, you can drag it to the correct spot on the form, resize it, and then save the file. The signed PDF can then be emailed, uploaded, or printed — whatever you need.

This approach is accepted for most everyday documents like rental forms, permission slips, medical forms, and business agreements. For legally binding contracts that require a certified e-signature (such as real estate closing documents), you may need a dedicated e-signature service like DocuSign. But for the vast majority of everyday paperwork, Preview's signature tool works perfectly.

The whole process takes about two minutes once your signature is saved, and the original document quality is preserved.
