    1

Download Lyft and set up your account

    ~15s
Search for "Lyft" in the App Store or Google Play Store and install the free app. Sign up with your phone number. You will receive a text with a verification code — enter it to confirm your account.
    2

    Add your payment method

    ~18s
Tap the menu (three lines) in the top left and select "Payment." Add a debit or credit card, or PayPal. You can also add a Lyft Gift Card balance here if you bought one at a retail store.

    Quick Tip

Your payment information is stored securely and charged automatically at the end of every ride.

    3

    Request a ride

    ~22s
The app shows your current location on a map. Type your destination in the "Where to?" field. Choose "Lyft" for a standard ride or "Lyft XL" for a larger vehicle. Review the price estimate, then tap "Request Lyft" to confirm.

    Quick Tip

If the price is higher than usual due to busy demand, the app will show a warning. You can wait a few minutes for prices to drop.

    4

Verify your driver and get in

    ~19s
The app shows your driver's name, photo, car color, car model, and license plate. When a car arrives, check all of these details before getting in. You can also tap "Contact" to call or text your driver through the app.

    Warning

Always verify the license plate and driver photo match the app before entering any vehicle.

    5

    Pay and rate your trip

    ~16s
Your saved payment method is charged automatically when the trip ends. You can add a tip for your driver inside the app — common amounts are $1, $2, or 20% of the fare. You will also be asked to give a star rating from one to five.
    6

    Share your ride for safety

    ~15s
Tap the shield icon during any ride to share your live location and trip details with a contact. You can also use this screen to call 911 with your location attached. Lyft's support team is available 24/7 through the Help section of the app.

Lyft is a ride service that works a lot like Uber — you use an app on your phone to request a nearby driver, track the ride in real time, and pay automatically when you arrive. It operates in most major US cities and many smaller towns, making it a practical option whether you need a ride to a doctor's appointment, the airport, or the grocery store.

To get started, download the Lyft app for free from the App Store on iPhone or the Google Play Store on Android. You will create an account with your phone number or email, then verify your identity with a code sent by text. Once inside the app, go to the Payment section and add a credit card, debit card, or PayPal. If you prefer not to use a card, you can purchase Lyft Gift Cards at many retail stores and add that balance to your account as Lyft Cash.

Requesting a ride works the same way every time. The app detects your location automatically, so you confirm your pickup spot on the map, then enter your destination. You will see two main options: Lyft is the standard ride at the most affordable price, while Lyft XL fits up to six passengers and is great for groups or when you have a lot of luggage. The app shows the estimated fare and how many minutes away your driver is before you confirm anything.

One of Lyft's most reassuring features is driver verification. Every driver's profile shows their name, photo, and the exact car they are driving — including the color and license plate. Before you get in, match those details to what the app shows. You can also tap a button to call or text your driver directly through the app if you need to give them special directions.

When the trip ends, payment happens automatically. You can leave a tip inside the app, and you will be asked to rate the driver. Lyft also includes a safety feature called Smart Trip Check-In, which will check in with you during longer trips if anything seems unusual. You can share your live ride status with a family member or friend so someone you trust always knows where you are.
