Khan Academy is a nonprofit educational organization that has put thousands of hours of video lessons and practice exercises on the internet for free. Anyone can use it at any time without paying a cent. The mission is straightforward: provide a world-class education for anyone, anywhere.
The range of subjects is broad. Khan Academy covers mathematics from basic arithmetic through calculus and linear algebra, sciences including biology, chemistry, and physics, computer programming, economics, art history, grammar and writing, and test prep for the SAT, ACT, LSAT, MCAT, and GED. There is also a dedicated section for personal finance and a complete curriculum aligned to K-12 grade levels.
To get started, go to khanacademy.org in a web browser or download the Khan Academy app from the App Store or Google Play. Creating a free account lets you track your progress and pick up where you left off — you can also use a Google, Apple, or Facebook account to sign in.
When you browse for a subject, you'll find it broken into courses and then individual units. Each unit contains short video lessons (usually 5 to 15 minutes each) followed by practice questions. The questions adapt based on how you're doing — if you get several wrong, it slows down and gives you more foundational practice; if you're flying through, it advances.
Adults use Khan Academy regularly. Some people brush up on algebra before helping a teenager with homework. Others work through personal finance lessons to better understand investing or budgeting. Retirees explore art history or world history courses for personal enrichment. There's no age gate and no judgment for starting from the beginning.
For parents and grandparents, Khan Academy offers parent accounts that let you link to a child's account and see their progress, time spent, and mastery levels without any subscription fee.
Khanmigo is Khan Academy's AI tutor, available as a paid add-on. It gives personalized hints and explanations rather than just providing answers, making it a helpful study companion for students.
The Khan Academy Kids app (separate download) is designed for children ages 2 through 8 with interactive games and reading activities.
For offline use, the mobile app lets you download individual videos to watch without a Wi-Fi connection — helpful when traveling or in areas with spotty internet.
