How to Use Spotlight Search on iPhone to Find Anything Fast

Spotlight is iPhone's built-in search tool — swipe down from the home screen and type anything. Find apps, contacts, emails, photos, and web results without opening a single app.

    1

    Open Spotlight Search

    ~27s
From any home screen page, swipe down from the middle of the screen (not the very top or the bottom). The search bar appears at the top. On some iPhones, you can also swipe left past the last home screen page to reach the App Library and search bar.

    Quick Tip

Quick Tip: You can also tap the Search bar at the very bottom of your home screen if your iPhone shows it there. Some Lock Screens also let you swipe down to open Spotlight.

    Search for Apps

    ~16s
Type the first few letters of any app name. The app appears in results immediately — even if you cannot remember which screen or folder it is on. Tap the app icon in the results to open it. This works for every app installed on your phone.

    Find People and Recent Conversations

    ~15s
Type a person's name. Spotlight shows their contact card at the top, with options to call, text, or email. Below, it shows recent messages, emails, and even photos that include their name as a tag. Tap any result to go directly to that item.
    4

    Search Photos by Content

    ~17s
Type a description instead of a file name: "beach," "birthday cake," "dog," or "sunset." Spotlight shows matching photos from your library using Apple's on-device photo analysis. It finds photos by the content in them, not just their date or title — so "red car" shows photos that contain red cars.
    5

    Do Quick Math and Conversions

    ~17s
Type a math problem directly into Spotlight: "87 + 23" shows 110. "20% of 80" shows 16. Type "100 USD to EUR" for a currency conversion. Type "5 miles in km" for unit conversion. Type "define curious" for an instant dictionary definition. These answers appear without opening any app.

Spotlight is iPhone's universal search feature. Pull it up with a swipe and you can find virtually anything on or related to your phone in seconds — without tapping through apps or menus.

Open Spotlight by swiping down from the middle of your home screen (not from the very top, which opens notifications). A search bar appears with suggested apps and recent items. Start typing and results appear instantly.

Spotlight searches across everything at once: your apps, contacts, emails, messages, notes, calendar events, reminders, photos, music, documents, and the web. If you type a person's name, Spotlight shows their contact card, recent text messages from them, emails from them, and photos of them.

Spotlight can also do quick calculations (type "15 * 12" to get 180 instantly), currency conversions, unit conversions, and even define words (type "define serendipity" to get the dictionary definition without opening a browser).

For apps, Spotlight is faster than searching your home screen pages. Type the first two letters of an app's name and tap to open it. This saves time when you have dozens of apps across many home screen pages.
