How to Find Your iPhone's Serial Number

Your iPhone's serial number is needed for warranty claims, repairs, trade-ins, and confirming you have the right coverage. Here are four ways to find it in under a minute.

    1

Find It in Settings (Easiest Method)

    ~24s
On your iPhone, go to SettingsGeneralAbout. Scroll down until you see "Serial Number." Tap and hold on the number to copy it — you can then paste it into an email, web form, or note.

    Quick Tip

Quick Tip: On the same About page, you will also find your IMEI number a few lines below the serial number. Make a note of both and store them somewhere safe.

    2

    Find It on Apple's Website

    ~16s
Go to appleid.apple.com in a browser and sign in with your Apple ID. Under "Devices," click your iPhone. Apple shows you the serial number and model for each device linked to your account. This is useful if your phone is broken or you are trading it in.
    3

Find It on the Original Box

    ~16s
If you still have the box your iPhone came in, look on the back or side panel. The serial number is printed there, along with the model number and storage size. This is especially helpful if the phone's screen is damaged and you cannot access Settings.
    4

Find It Engraved on the Phone (Older Models)

    ~20s
On iPhone 6s and earlier, the serial number is engraved in tiny text on the back of the phone near the bottom. You may need good lighting and reading glasses to see it. On iPhone 7 and newer, the serial number is no longer engraved on the body — use one of the other methods instead.
    5

Check Your Warranty Using the Serial Number

    ~15s
With your serial number in hand, go to checkcoverage.apple.com and enter it. Apple shows you the phone's coverage status: whether the limited warranty is active, whether AppleCare+ is active, and the expiration dates. This takes about 10 seconds and is completely free.

Your iPhone's serial number is a unique identifier — a string of letters and numbers that Apple uses to track your specific device. You need it when making a warranty claim at the Apple Store, requesting a repair, trading your phone in for a new one, checking your warranty status online, or reporting your phone as stolen.

The serial number is not the same as your phone number. It is built into the phone's hardware and never changes, no matter who owns the device or what number is on the SIM card.

There are several ways to find your serial number — through the Settings app (easiest), through Apple's website (using your Apple ID), on the original box the phone came in, or physically engraved on the phone itself (depending on the model).

Your IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) number is related but different — it is used specifically by phone carriers to block a stolen phone from connecting to cellular networks. You may be asked for either the serial number or IMEI depending on the situation.
