How to Send Emergency Texts via Satellite on iPhone

iPhone 14 and later can send messages and share your location via satellite when there is no cell or Wi-Fi signal — a potential lifesaver in remote areas.

    1

    Confirm your iPhone supports satellite

    ~15s
Satellite features require iPhone 14 or newer (iPhone 14, 14 Pro, 15, 15 Pro, 16, or 16 Pro and later). Go to SettingsGeneralAbout and check your model if unsure.
    2

For emergencies: use Emergency SOS via satellite

    ~15s
With no signal, press and hold the side button + volume button to bring up the Emergency SOS slider. Slide it, then follow the on-screen instructions to connect via satellite. The phone will guide you to aim it at the sky.
    3

For non-emergency messages: use the Messages app

    ~20s
When you have no cell or Wi-Fi signal, open Messages and start a conversation. The app will tell you "No cellular coverage — connect via satellite." Tap "Connect via Satellite" and follow the alignment instructions.

    Quick Tip

Go outside and face the open sky — trees, buildings, and mountains can block the satellite signal. Move to a clearing if possible.

    4

    Share your location via satellite

    ~15s
In an emergency without signal, you can also share your location via the Find My app. Open Find My → tap your name → "Share My Location via Satellite." This sends your GPS coordinates to a contact.
    5

Practice the motion before you need it

    ~22s
Spend two minutes reading through the Emergency SOS satellite setup steps in a safe place so you know what to do if you ever need it. The on-screen guide walks you through it, but familiarity helps under stress.

    Warning

Satellite features require a clear view of the sky. They work outdoors but not inside a car or building. Position yourself outside with the sky visible above you.

Modern iPhones include satellite communication as a safety net for emergencies. When you have no cell signal and no Wi-Fi, your iPhone can still reach emergency services and share your location using satellite technology.

    Apple offers two satellite features:

    Emergency SOS via satellite

: Connect directly to emergency services when you are out of cell range. Available in all US states and many countries. To use it, swipe to Emergency SOS and follow the on-screen prompts — the phone guides you to point it at the sky for a satellite connection.

    Messages via satellite (iOS 18)

: Send and receive text messages through satellite when you have no cell service. This is for non-emergency communication — keeping in touch during camping trips, hiking in remote areas, or power outages that knock out cell towers. This feature works with Apple's iMessage and some SMS texts.

    Roadside Assistance via satellite

: If you break down without cell coverage, you can contact roadside assistance through satellite in the US.

Satellite features are available on iPhone 14 and newer. Apple includes two free years of satellite service with new iPhones; after that, a subscription may be required (pricing not yet finalized as of 2026).

Messages via satellite are slower than regular texts — each message may take 15 to 60 seconds to send. They are also limited to plain text, no photos. Save battery life by keeping satellite use brief.
