How to Mirror Your iPhone Screen to a TV

Show your iPhone screen on your TV using AirPlay or an HDMI cable — great for sharing photos, videos, and apps with the whole family.

    1

Check if your TV supports AirPlay

    ~24s
Go to your TV's home screen and look for the AirPlay logo or an AirPlay option in settings. Most Samsung, LG, Sony, and Vizio smart TVs from 2019 or later support AirPlay 2. You can also check by searching your TV's brand and model number online.

    Quick Tip

If you have an Apple TV (the small black box) connected to your TV, AirPlay will always work perfectly regardless of your TV's age.

    2

Connect your iPhone to the same Wi-Fi

    ~16s
For AirPlay to work wirelessly, your iPhone and TV must be on the same Wi-Fi network. On your iPhone, go to SettingsWi-Fi and confirm the network name. On your TV, confirm it's connected to the same network in its Network Settings.
    3

    Open Control Center

    ~15s
On your iPhone, swipe down from the top right corner of the screen to open Control Center. (On older iPhones with a Home button, swipe up from the bottom.) Look for the "Screen Mirroring" button — it looks like two overlapping rectangles.
    4

    Select your TV

    ~21s
Tap "Screen Mirroring" and wait a few seconds. Your TV should appear in the list of available devices. Tap your TV's name. If prompted on the TV screen, enter the passcode shown on the TV into your iPhone.

    Quick Tip

If your TV doesn't appear, make sure both devices are on the same Wi-Fi network and try toggling Wi-Fi off and on on your iPhone.

    5

Use the cable method (for older TVs)

    ~24s
If your TV doesn't support AirPlay, buy a Lightning to HDMI adapter (about $10-$15) or USB-C to HDMI adapter at Amazon, Best Buy, or any electronics store. Plug one end into your iPhone and the other into an HDMI port on your TV. Switch the TV to the correct HDMI input and your screen will appear automatically.

    Warning

Use genuine Apple-certified adapters. Uncertified cheap adapters often overheat or display poor quality video.

Mirroring your iPhone to your TV lets everyone in the room see what's on your phone screen — photos, videos, apps, video calls, and more. There are two main ways to do this: wirelessly using AirPlay, or with a cable.

AirPlay is Apple's wireless technology for streaming content to a TV. It works with Apple TV (the streaming box), AirPlay 2-compatible smart TVs (including most Samsung, LG, and Sony TVs made after 2018), and some Roku devices. When your iPhone and TV are on the same Wi-Fi network, you can wirelessly send your screen to the TV in a few taps.

If your TV is older or doesn't support AirPlay, a Lightning to HDMI adapter (for older iPhones) or a USB-C to HDMI adapter (for iPhone 15 and newer) plugged into your TV works equally well with no Wi-Fi required.

Screen mirroring is great for showing vacation photos on the big screen, video calling family on the TV, sharing a recipe while cooking, helping a family member with their phone by showing your screen, and more.
