    1

    Open the Journal app

    ~18s
Find the Journal app on your home screen — it looks like a small open book. If you can't find it, swipe down from the center of the home screen and search "Journal." It requires iOS 17.2 or later, so update your iPhone first if needed via Settings > General > Software Update.
    2

    Create your first entry

    ~21s
Tap the compose button (pencil icon) at the bottom right. You'll see a blank entry ready for you to type. Give your entry a title or leave it blank — both work. Start writing in the body area below.

    Quick Tip

Tap the media icons at the bottom of the entry to attach a photo, add a voice recording, or log your current location.

    3

Use a suggested prompt if you feel stuck

    ~17s
When you tap the compose button, Journal shows a "Suggestions" section above the blank entry. These are personalized prompts based on your day — a recent trip, something you listened to, or a photo you took. Tap any suggestion to start an entry based on it.
    4

    Set a journaling reminder

    ~15s
Tap your profile picture or the three-dot menu at the top right, then choose "Settings." Turn on "Journaling Suggestions" and set a daily reminder time. Your iPhone will send a quiet notification when it's time to write.
    5

    Keep your journal private

    ~21s
Journal locks automatically when your screen locks. You can also require Face ID or your passcode to open it. In Settings within the app, look for "Lock Journal" and turn it on for an extra layer of privacy.

    Quick Tip

All your entries are backed up to iCloud but stored in an encrypted format, meaning only you can access them on your trusted devices.

Journal is a free app from Apple that comes pre-installed on iPhones running iOS 17.2 or later. It's a private diary for your phone — a place to record your thoughts, save meaningful photos, log what you've been listening to, or simply write down how your day went.

What makes Journal different from a standard notes app is that it offers personalized suggestions. Based on what's already on your phone — recent photos, songs you've played, places you've visited, or workouts you've completed — Journal will suggest prompts to help you start writing. You're never forced to write about those suggestions; they're just there to spark ideas.

Every entry you write is stored privately on your device and backed up to iCloud, encrypted so only you can read it. Nobody else can see your journal, not even Apple.

You can add text, photos, voice recordings, and even your current location to each entry. There's also a "Reflection" section with thoughtful writing prompts for anyone who wants a bit of guided journaling.

Journaling has real benefits for mental health — writing down what's on your mind can reduce stress, improve memory, and help you process difficult feelings. Whether you want to write a paragraph a day or a full page, Journal meets you where you are. You can also set a reminder so your iPhone nudges you to journal at the same time each day.
