    Verify the Backup Is Working

    ~26s
After turning on iCloud Contacts, wait a minute and then go to iCloud.com in a web browser on your computer or another device. Sign in with your Apple ID and click Contacts. You should see your contacts there, confirming the sync is working.

    Warning

Your iPhone contacts are important — they contain the phone numbers and email addresses of everyone you know. If your phone is lost, stolen, or breaks, having a backup means you can get all of those contacts back on a new phone without starting from scratch.

The safest and most automatic way to back up iPhone contacts is through iCloud. When iCloud Contacts sync is turned on, every contact you save is automatically copied to Apple's cloud servers. If you ever need to restore your phone or set up a new one, signing in to your Apple account will bring all your contacts back immediately.

iCloud gives every Apple account 5 GB of free storage. Contacts take up very little space — a few thousand contacts might only use a megabyte or two — so unless your iCloud is completely full, backing up contacts will not cause any storage issues.

Once this setting is turned on, it runs in the background continuously. Any new contact you add on your iPhone will be automatically synced to iCloud within a few minutes. You do not have to do anything manually.

If you have contacts stored in other accounts — like Gmail or Outlook — those are typically already syncing through those services. This guide focuses specifically on the iCloud contacts that live on your iPhone.
