Every rechargeable battery loses capacity over time. After 500 full charges (a cycle), an iPhone battery may hold only about 80% of its original capacity — meaning your phone won't last as long between charges as it once did. After more cycles, this can drop further.
Apple built a Battery Health feature into iPhones running iOS 11.3 and later that shows you exactly what percentage of original capacity your battery still holds, and whether the battery is performing normally or degrading to a point where replacement makes sense.
If your iPhone battery doesn't last through a full day anymore and the health percentage is below 80%, an Apple battery replacement ($49 for most models at an Apple Store) can make your phone feel brand new again — without buying a new phone.
