What Is iCloud Private Relay and Should You Turn It On?

iCloud Private Relay hides your internet browsing from your internet provider and Apple — here's what it does and whether it's worth enabling.

    1

Check if you have iCloud+ (required for Private Relay)

    ~21s
iCloud Private Relay requires a paid iCloud+ plan. Go to Settings → your name → iCloud. If you see "iCloud+" in the storage section, you have it. iCloud+ plans start at $0.99/month for 50GB. If you have any paid iCloud storage, Private Relay is included at no extra cost. It is not available on the free 5GB iCloud plan.
    2

    Turn on Private Relay

    ~37s
Go to Settings → your name → iCloudPrivate Relay. Tap the toggle to turn it on. You can choose between two options: "Maintain General Location" (websites see your approximate city or region — better for local search results) or "Use Country and Time Zone" (more private but websites see only your country, which may make some location-based features less accurate). The first option is the right choice for most people.

    Quick Tip

If Private Relay causes a website to behave oddly (some websites block traffic they cannot identify), you can turn it off temporarily for that website in Safari: tap "aA" in the address bar → "Website Settings" → turn off Private Relay for that site.

    3

    Understand what Private Relay protects

    ~25s
Private Relay protects your Safari browsing and DNS queries (the process of looking up website addresses). Your internet provider can see that you are using the internet but cannot see which websites you are visiting. Websites you visit cannot link your IP address to your real location. What it does NOT protect: apps other than Safari, phone calls, texts, your location in Maps, or any activity on a work or school network that monitors traffic.

Know the limitations compared to a full VPN

    ~27s
Private Relay is specifically designed for Safari. If you use Chrome, Firefox, or any other browser on your iPhone, Private Relay does not apply. It also does not work in all countries — Apple disables it in regions where local regulations prevent it. For people who want privacy across all apps and browsers, a full VPN is still needed. But for iPhone users who primarily use Safari and have an iCloud+ plan, Private Relay is a convenient, no-setup privacy improvement.

iCloud Private Relay is an Apple privacy feature that comes with an iCloud+ subscription (50GB, 200GB, or 2TB storage plans). It routes your Safari browsing through two separate internet servers so that your internet provider cannot see which websites you visit, and Apple cannot see your IP address and browsing activity at the same time. It is not a full VPN — it only covers Safari, not other apps — but it is a meaningful privacy upgrade for Safari users with no extra software to install.
