How to Use Your Phone as a TV Remote When You Lose the Remote

Your smartphone can control most smart TVs — learn how to set it up for Samsung, LG, Roku, Fire TV, and Apple TV in just a few taps.

    1

Make sure phone and TV are on the same Wi-Fi

    ~15s
Check that your phone is connected to your home Wi-Fi (not cellular data) and that it is the same network your TV is on — not a guest network.
    2

    Download the right app

    ~15s
Samsung: SmartThings. LG: LG ThinQ. Roku: Roku app. Amazon Fire TV: Amazon Fire TV app. Apple TV: built into iPhone (swipe down from top right → tap remote icon). All are free.
    3

Connect the app to your TV

    ~15s
Open the app and tap "Devices" or the TV icon. When your TV appears in the list, tap it. Enter the code shown on your TV screen if prompted.
    4

    Use the on-screen remote

    ~17s
The app shows a virtual remote. You can control volume, change channels, and use your phone keyboard to type searches — much easier than the physical remote for entering text.

    Quick Tip

Save the app to your home screen so it is quick to find next time the remote goes missing.

Losing the TV remote is one of the most universal frustrations. The good news is that most smart TVs can be controlled by a free app on your smartphone — and in many cases, the phone app is actually more convenient than the original remote because it has a full keyboard for searching.

First, your phone and TV must be connected to the same home Wi-Fi network. Then download the right app for your TV: Samsung TVs use the "SmartThings" app (available free on iPhone and Android). LG TVs use the "LG ThinQ" app. Roku TVs and Roku streaming sticks use the "Roku" app. Amazon Fire TV and Fire Stick use the "Amazon Fire TV" app. Apple TV uses the "Apple TV Remote" app (built into the iPhone Control Center — swipe down from the top right and tap the remote icon). For older TVs that are not "smart," you can buy a small universal remote for about $10 at any pharmacy or electronics store.

Open the app, make sure your phone's Wi-Fi is on, and tap the "Devices" tab or the TV icon. The app will automatically search for your TV on the same network. When your TV appears, tap it. You may need to enter a code that appears on the TV screen to confirm the connection. Once connected, the app gives you a virtual remote control — you can change channels, adjust volume, and type search terms using your phone's keyboard.
