How to Set Up and Use a Google Chromecast

A Chromecast plugs into your TV and lets you play videos from Netflix, YouTube, and other apps on the big screen from your phone.

    1

    Plug in your Chromecast

    ~18s
Plug the Chromecast into an HDMI port on the back or side of your TV. Plug the power cable into the Chromecast and a wall outlet. Turn your TV on and use your TV remote to switch to the HDMI input you used. You'll see the Chromecast setup screen appear on your TV.
    2

Download the Google Home app and complete setup

    ~25s
Download the free "Google Home" app on your iPhone or Android phone. Open the app and sign in with your Google account. Tap the plus (+) button → "Set up device" → "New devices." Follow the on-screen instructions — the app will find your Chromecast automatically (make sure your phone is on the same WiFi network). Connect the Chromecast to your home WiFi and give it a name like "Living Room TV."
    3

Cast from a streaming app on your phone

    ~34s
Open Netflix, YouTube, or another streaming app on your phone. Find the Cast icon — it looks like a rectangle with a WiFi symbol in the bottom left corner. Tap it. Your Chromecast will appear in the list — tap it. The video will appear on your TV screen. You can now control the video from your phone (play, pause, fast-forward) while your TV displays it.

    Quick Tip

Once you've started casting, you can put your phone away or use it for other things. The video continues playing on your TV from the internet — you don't need to keep the app open on your phone.

    4

Cast photos or music to your TV

    ~19s
In Google Photos: tap a photo, tap the Share icon, tap "Cast to TV." Your photos will display as a slideshow on your TV — great for sharing vacation photos with family. For music, open Spotify or Google Play Music, tap the Cast icon, and select your Chromecast. Your music plays through your TV's speakers.
