How to Add Widgets to Your Android Phone's Home Screen

Android widgets show live information — weather, news, calendar events — right on your home screen without opening any apps.

    1

    Enter widget editing mode

    ~15s
Press and hold an empty area of your Android Home Screen (a spot where there are no app icons) for 2-3 seconds. The screen will zoom out slightly and show a menu at the bottom. Tap "Widgets." A scrollable list of all available widgets appears.
    2

    Browse and select a widget

    ~20s
Scroll through the widget list. Widgets are grouped by app — so all Google Calendar widgets are together, all Weather widgets are together, etc. Tap any widget name to see its size and preview. Most apps offer widgets in different sizes — a small 1x1 widget just shows one piece of information, while a larger 4x2 widget shows more detail.
    3

Place the widget on your home screen

    ~27s
Press and hold the widget you want to add. Drag it from the widget menu and drop it on your home screen in an empty area. Resize the widget by pressing and holding it on the home screen — blue dots appear at the edges. Drag the dots to resize. Tap anywhere else to confirm the placement.

    Quick Tip

If there isn't enough space for the widget where you want it, delete or rearrange some apps first to create an open area.

    4

Remove a widget you don't want

    ~15s
Press and hold the widget on your home screen. Drag it to the "Remove" option that appears at the top of the screen. This removes the widget from your home screen but does not uninstall the app it came from.
