How to Upgrade to a New Phone Without Losing Your Data

Getting a new phone is exciting but can feel stressful — here's how to move everything from your old phone to your new one without losing photos or contacts.

    1

Back up your old phone before you do anything else

    ~39s
iPhone: go to Settings → your name → iCloud → iCloud Backup → tap "Back Up Now." Make sure you are connected to WiFi. Wait until it says "Last successful backup" with today's date and time. Android: go to SettingsAccounts and backup (or GoogleBack up to Google Drive) → Back up now. This backs up your contacts, app data, call history, and some settings to Google's servers. Photos on Android: open the Google Photos app and make sure "Backup" is turned on in the app settings.

    Quick Tip

Do the backup the night before you activate your new phone. Having a backup from a few minutes ago is much better than one from last week.

    2

Transfer iPhone to iPhone using the Quick Start method

    ~30s
When you first turn on a new iPhone, hold it near your old iPhone (both should be unlocked). A screen will appear on your old iPhone asking if you want to set up the new device — tap "Continue." Follow the prompts. Use "Transfer from iPhone" to move your data directly over a cable (fastest) or wirelessly. When transferring wirelessly over WiFi, a full transfer can take 30–90 minutes depending on how much data you have. Keep both phones plugged in and close together until it completes.
    3

Transfer Android to Android using Google's setup

    ~26s
Samsung phones have a "Smart Switch" app that handles transfers via cable or WiFi. For any Android phone, during initial setup you will be asked to sign in with your Google account — this automatically restores your backed-up data. Your contacts, calendar, and some app settings restore automatically. Apps reinstall from the Play Store. For photos, open Google Photos on the new phone, sign in, and your entire photo library will be accessible from the cloud immediately.

What does not transfer automatically (and what to do)

    ~45s
A few things need to be done manually: Two-factor authentication apps — if you use Google Authenticator or Microsoft Authenticator, you need to set those up again on the new phone using each service's account recovery process. Text message history — iPhone messages transfer via the Quick Start process; Android messages from one brand to another may not. Some apps need you to log back in. Bank and financial apps usually require re-verification for security. WhatsApp: follow the in-app transfer instructions specifically, as its messages require a separate backup process.

    Quick Tip

Before trading in or selling your old phone, do a factory reset: SettingsGeneralTransfer or Reset iPhoneErase All Content and Settings (iPhone) or SettingsGeneral ManagementResetFactory Data Reset (Android). This removes all your personal data from the device.
