How to Update Google Chrome to the Latest Version

Chrome updates silently, but sometimes needs a push. Here is how to check and install the latest version in under 2 minutes.

    1

    Open the Chrome menu

    ~22s
Click the three vertical dots in the very top-right corner of your Chrome window (they look like a small stack of dots). This opens a dropdown menu with all of Chrome's options.

    Quick Tip

If you see a small colored dot next to those three dots — green, orange, or red — that means an update is already waiting and needs you to restart Chrome to apply it.

    2

Go to Help, then About Google Chrome

    ~15s
In the dropdown menu, hover over or click "Help." A smaller menu will appear — click "About Google Chrome." Chrome will immediately start checking for updates. This page shows your current version number.
    3

    Let it download and install

    ~15s
If an update is available, you will see a progress bar while it downloads. It usually takes under 30 seconds on a normal internet connection. When it finishes, a button will appear saying "Relaunch."
    4

Click Relaunch to apply the update

    ~22s
Click the "Relaunch" button. Chrome will close and reopen. Your tabs will be restored exactly as they were. The update is now applied and your browser is fully protected.

    Warning

Save any work — like a long email you were composing or a form you were filling out — before clicking Relaunch. Chrome usually restores your tabs, but unsaved text in web forms may be lost.

    5

Confirm you have the latest version

    ~24s
After Chrome relaunches, go back to the three-dot menu → HelpAbout Google Chrome. It should now say "Google Chrome is up to date." You will also see your current version number — as of April 2026, version 135 is the latest.

    Quick Tip

Google's Chrome release notes and security advisories are published at chromium.googleblog.com and chromereleases.googleblog.com. You can check there any time to see what was fixed in the latest update.

Google Chrome updates itself in the background most of the time — but the update only applies after you restart the browser. If you leave Chrome open for days or weeks without restarting, you could be using an outdated version with known security holes.

In April 2026, Google confirmed 60 newly discovered security vulnerabilities in Chrome, two of them rated "critical." The fix was already rolled out, but only applies once you restart Chrome or manually trigger the update. Checking takes about 60 seconds.

This guide works on Windows and Mac computers. Chrome on iPhone and Android updates through the App Store or Google Play, the same as any other app.
