How to Speed Up a Slow Internet Browser in 5 Minutes

If web pages are loading slowly or your browser feels sluggish, clearing cached files and a few other quick steps can speed things up.

    1

    Clear cache in Google Chrome

    ~30s
Open Chrome and click the three vertical dots in the top right corner. Hover over "More tools" and click "Clear browsing data." A window will pop up — change the Time Range to "All time." Make sure "Cached images and files" and "Cookies and other site data" are both checked. Click the blue "Clear data" button. Chrome will clear the files and reload the page.

    Quick Tip

After clearing cookies, you'll need to log back in to websites like your email, Facebook, and banking — so make sure you know your passwords before doing this.

    2

    Clear cache in Microsoft Edge

    ~20s
Open Edge and click the three horizontal dots in the top right corner. Click "Settings" → "Privacy, search, and services." Under "Clear browsing data," click "Choose what to clear." Check "Cached images and files" and "Cookies and other site data." Click "Clear now." Edge will clear the files and you may need to log back in to some websites.
    3

Close extra tabs you're not using

    ~33s
Having 15 or 20 tabs open at once uses a significant amount of your computer's memory (RAM) and can slow down the entire browser — and sometimes the whole computer. Close tabs you're not actively using by clicking the small X on each tab. If you need to save a page to come back to, bookmark it: press Ctrl + D (Windows) or Command + D (Mac) to add it to your bookmarks.

    Quick Tip

A good rule of thumb: if you haven't looked at a tab in more than 30 minutes, close it. You can always search for the page again in seconds.

    4

Remove browser extensions you don't use

    ~24s
Browser extensions run quietly in the background and can slow things down significantly. In Chrome, click the puzzle piece icon near the top right — this shows your installed extensions. Click the three-dot menu next to any extension you don't recognize or no longer use and click "Remove from Chrome." If you're not sure what an extension does, removing it is usually safe — you can always reinstall it later.

If your internet browser — Chrome, Edge, Safari, or Firefox — loads pages slowly or freezes up often, a buildup of temporary files called 'cache' is often the cause. Over time, these files pile up and can slow your browser down. Clearing them out takes about two minutes and often makes a noticeable improvement.
