    1

    Open the Health app

    ~20s
Find the Health app on your iPhone — it has a white background with a red heart. Tap to open it. If it's your first time opening it, you'll see a brief introduction screen. Fill in the optional profile details (age, height, weight) if you like — these help calculate more accurate calorie counts — or skip for now.
    2

    Find your step count

    ~27s
Tap the "Browse" tab at the bottom of the screen (it looks like a grid icon). Tap "Activity" from the categories list. Then tap "Steps." You'll see today's step count and a bar chart showing recent days. Scroll down to see your weekly and monthly averages and trend lines.

    Quick Tip

You can also add steps to your "Favorites" on the Summary tab for quicker access. On the Steps screen, tap "Add to Favorites" and steps will appear at the top of your Health summary each day.

    3

    View weekly and monthly trends

    ~20s
On the Steps screen, tap the "W" (week) or "M" (month) button above the chart to switch views. The weekly view shows a bar for each day of the past week. The monthly view shows a summary of each week. This lets you spot whether you're more active on certain days, and how your activity changes over the months.
    4

    Set a daily step goal

    ~30s
On the Steps data screen, scroll down past the charts and look for "Add Goal" or "Options." Tap it and enter your desired daily step target. A common starting goal is 7,000–10,000 steps. The Health app will show you a percentage of your goal each day. Start with a number that feels achievable and increase it as walking becomes a habit.

    Quick Tip

If you're unsure of a goal, look at your average steps over the past week (shown on the monthly chart) and set a goal that's about 20% higher than your current average.

Make sure your phone is with you throughout the day

    ~25s
The Health app can only count steps when your phone is with you. Carry it in your pocket, purse, or bag to capture the most complete count. If you leave your phone at home or on a desk for part of the day, those steps won't be counted. An Apple Watch, if you have one, counts steps even when your phone isn't nearby and syncs the data to Health automatically.

Your iPhone counts your steps all day long using its built-in motion sensors — and you don't need to do anything to turn this on. The Health app records every step you take as long as your phone is with you. When you open the Health app for the first time, you'll already have days or weeks of step data waiting.

The Health app is the white app with a red heart icon that comes pre-installed on all iPhones. It's a central place where Apple collects data from your phone's sensors, from Apple Watch if you have one, and from other fitness apps. Step counting is one of its core features.

Your iPhone measures steps using an accelerometer — a sensor that detects movement and vibration. It's the same kind of sensor your phone uses to rotate the screen when you tilt it. When you walk, the phone's movement pattern is recognized as steps. The count is quite accurate when your phone is in your pocket, bag, or hand.

The Health app shows you how many steps you took today, how that compares to your recent average, and charts that show your step history over days, weeks, and months. You can also set a personal step goal as a daily target.

The widely cited recommendation of 10,000 steps per day is a general guideline, but research suggests that any consistent increase in daily steps has health benefits. If you're currently averaging 3,000 steps a day, aiming for 4,000–5,000 is a meaningful improvement without being overwhelming.

Step data is stored locally on your iPhone and is private — Apple doesn't share it with advertisers. You can also share specific health data with your doctor or with family members through the Health app's sharing features if you choose to.
