    1

Decide which service matches your usual grocery store

    ~23s
Think about where you normally shop. If you shop at Kroger, Safeway, or Publix, Instacart is a strong choice. If you shop mainly at Walmart, consider Walmart+. If you shop at Whole Foods or already have Amazon Prime, try Amazon Fresh. Shipt is best for Target shoppers. Check each app to confirm your local store is available in your area by entering your zip code.
    2

Download the app and create an account

    ~20s
Search for the service by name in the App Store or Google Play. Download the app. Create a free account with your email address. You will not be charged anything until you place your first order (and choose a paid membership, if applicable). Most services let you browse and shop without a paid plan on your first order.
    3

    Enter your delivery address

    ~23s
The app will ask for your delivery address during setup or when you start your first order. Enter your full address including your apartment number if applicable. If you live in a gated community or have special delivery instructions (leave at door, ring doorbell, etc.), add those in the special instructions field.

    Quick Tip

Double-check that your address is entered correctly. Misdeliveries are almost always caused by a typo in the address.

    4

Shop and add items to your cart

    ~26s
Browse by category (Produce, Dairy, Meat, etc.) or search for specific items. Tap on an item to see the price, size options, and whether it is in stock. Tap Add to Cart. When you are done shopping, review your cart to check quantities and total cost including fees before checking out.

    Warning

Prices for the same item can be higher in a delivery app than in the physical store. Check the price per unit carefully for items you buy often.

    5

Choose your delivery window and check out

    ~19s
At checkout, choose a delivery time — many services offer same-day slots within a few hours. Review your order one more time, enter your payment information, and place the order. You will receive notifications when your shopper starts picking your order, when they are on their way, and when your order has been delivered.

Grocery delivery apps bring your groceries directly to your door — you shop from your phone and a shopper (or delivery driver) handles the rest. This is especially helpful for people who have difficulty getting to the store, do not drive, or want to save time.

There are four main services to know about, and each one works a bit differently.

Instacart works with over 1,400 grocery chains including Kroger, Costco, Safeway, Publix, Aldi, and many local stores. You order through the Instacart app, and a local shopper picks your items and delivers them, usually within one to two hours. You pay a delivery fee per order (around $3–$10), plus a service fee, and it is customary to tip your shopper. For frequent users, Instacart+ costs about $100 per year and includes free delivery on orders over $35.

Shipt is owned by Target and works similarly to Instacart, but focuses more heavily on Target and a smaller selection of other stores. Same-day delivery, shopper model, and tipping applies. A Shipt membership is about $100 per year for free delivery.

Walmart+ is Walmart's membership program ($98 per year). It includes free delivery from your local Walmart store, fuel discounts, and access to Paramount+ streaming. If you already do most of your shopping at Walmart, this is likely the best value option.

Amazon Fresh is Amazon's grocery delivery service, available to Amazon Prime members. It delivers groceries from Amazon Fresh warehouses (which stock common grocery brands) as well as from Whole Foods Market. Delivery is available same-day or next-day in many cities. Prime membership costs $139 per year.

Quick Tip: For your first order on any of these services, look for a first-order discount. All four typically offer $10–$20 off your first delivery.
