Google Wallet is a free app on Android phones that stores your payment cards, loyalty cards, boarding passes, and other important cards digitally. Instead of digging through your physical wallet at checkout, you can pay by holding your phone near the payment terminal — a process called "tap to pay."
Most major banks and credit unions now support Google Wallet, including Visa, Mastercard, American Express, and Discover cards. Many stores that have updated their payment terminals accept tap-to-pay, including Walmart, Target, CVS, Walgreens, McDonald's, and thousands of others. If you see the contactless payment symbol (it looks like a Wi-Fi signal turned sideways) at a checkout, you can use Google Wallet there.
Google Wallet is secure. When you pay, your actual card number is not shared with the store — instead, a one-time digital code is used, which means even if the payment data were intercepted, it could not be used again. You also need to unlock your phone with your fingerprint, face, or PIN before a tap-to-pay works, adding another layer of protection.
Beyond payments, Google Wallet can store loyalty cards like your CVS ExtraCare card or Starbucks Rewards card, as well as boarding passes from airlines, event tickets, and even digital driver's licenses (in supported states). Everything is organized in one place.
Google Wallet comes pre-installed on most Android phones. If you do not see it, search for it in the Google Play Store — it is free.
