    Download Google Translate

    ~15s
Search "Google Translate" in the App Store (iPhone) or Google Play (Android). Install the free app. You do not need a Google account to use the basic translation features, but signing in syncs your history across devices.
    2

    Open the Camera translation mode

    ~22s
Open Google Translate. Below the main text box, tap the camera icon (it looks like a camera with an arrow). This opens the camera translation feature. At the top, set the source language (the language you want to translate FROM) and your target language (English, or whatever you want to translate TO). Or leave source language as "Detect language" to let the app figure it out.
    3

Use Instant mode for live translation

    ~26s
At the bottom of the camera screen, "Instant" should already be selected. Point your camera at any text in the source language. The text on screen will be replaced with the English translation, overlaid in white boxes. Move your camera slowly around the document or sign. The translation updates in real time.

    Quick Tip

Quick Tip: Tap the pause button (two vertical lines) to freeze the translation so you can read it without moving. Tap again to resume live translation.

    4

Use Photo mode for more accuracy

    ~24s
Tap "Photo" at the bottom of the camera screen instead of "Instant." Frame the text you want to translate and tap the shutter button to capture it. The app analyzes the image and overlays translations. You can tap individual words for more specific translations or expand context.

    Quick Tip

Photo mode is more accurate for complex text, curved surfaces, or when the Instant mode is having trouble. Use Photo mode for menus and important documents.

    5

    Download languages for offline use

    ~15s
If you travel and may not have internet access, download languages in advance. In Google Translate, tap the menu icon → "Downloaded languages" → tap the download icon next to any language. Downloaded languages work completely offline — no internet needed for camera translation.

Google Translate is a free app that can do much more than translate text you type in. One of its most impressive features is camera translation — you point your phone camera at text in another language and the app overlays a translation in real time, right on top of the original text.

This is incredibly useful for: - Reading menus at foreign-cuisine restaurants where the menu is partly or entirely in another language - Understanding product labels, signs, or instructions in a foreign language - Translating documents or letters received in another language - Traveling and reading street signs, transit instructions, or tourist information

The real-time (instant) camera translation works with over 90 languages. For most common languages (Spanish, French, Chinese, Japanese, Arabic, etc.) the translation appears within a second or two as you move the camera.

There is also a "Photo" mode where you take a picture of text and then tap words to get translations — more accurate for complex or small text.

Google Translate is free on iPhone (App Store) and Android (Google Play). On Android, Google Translate is often pre-installed. The camera translation feature requires no subscription.
