How to Use Google Smart Lock to Stay Signed In Safely

Google Smart Lock keeps your Android phone unlocked in trusted places — like at home — and can remember passwords for apps and websites so you sign in automatically.

    1

    Open Smart Lock Settings

    ~21s
Go to SettingsSecuritySmart Lock. You may be asked to enter your current PIN or fingerprint to continue. A list of Smart Lock options appears: On-body detection, Trusted places, and Trusted devices.

    Quick Tip

Quick Tip: If you do not see Smart Lock in Security settings, try searching "Smart Lock" in your Settings search bar. Its location varies by Android version and phone brand.

    2

    Set Up Trusted Places

    ~19s
Tap "Trusted places." Tap "Add trusted place." Google Maps opens — navigate to your home address and tap "Select this location." Smart Lock marks that location. When your phone detects you are at home (using GPS), it stays unlocked automatically. Tap "Add trusted place" again to add more locations like a relative's home or your workplace.
    3

    Set Up Trusted Devices

    ~23s
Tap "Trusted devices." Tap "Add trusted device." Any Bluetooth device you have paired (your car's stereo, a Bluetooth speaker, a smartwatch) appears in the list. Select one. While your phone is connected to that Bluetooth device, it stays unlocked.

    Warning

Only add trusted devices that stay with you personally — like your own car's Bluetooth or your personal earbuds. Never add a shared device like a household speaker that others might connect to.

    4

    Enable On-Body Detection

    ~15s
Tap "On-body detection" and toggle it on. When on-body detection is active, your phone detects motion from being in your pocket or hand and stays unlocked. When you set it down on a table or put it in a bag, it locks after a short time.

Google Smart Lock is a set of features that reduce how often you need to unlock your Android phone or re-enter passwords — while keeping your account secure.

Smart Lock for your phone screen works in trusted situations: your home Wi-Fi network, your Bluetooth car stereo, your body's movement (On-body detection), or a trusted location. When any of these conditions are met, your phone stays unlocked. When you leave the trusted environment — going outside, losing connection to Bluetooth — the phone automatically locks again.

This means your phone stays accessible on your couch at home without typing your PIN every time, but locks automatically when it leaves your house.

Smart Lock for passwords is a separate feature that saves and fills in passwords for Google accounts and Android apps — similar to a password manager. When you sign into an app, Google asks if you want to save the password. Next time you open that app, it fills the password in automatically.

Smart Lock does not replace a strong lock screen — it works alongside it. You still need a PIN, pattern, or fingerprint when you restart the phone, or after it has been locked for a long period.
