    1

Download the App or Open in a Browser

    ~15s
On your phone, search for Google Meet in the App Store or Google Play and install the free app. On a computer, go to meet.google.com in any web browser — no download needed. Sign in with your Google (Gmail) account.
    2

    Start a New Meeting

    ~25s
Tap or click New Meeting. You will see three options: Start an Instant Meeting (starts right away), Create a Meeting for Later (gives you a link to share in advance), or Schedule in Google Calendar. For a quick call, choose Start an Instant Meeting.

    Quick Tip

Quick Tip: When starting a meeting, allow Google Meet access to your camera and microphone when prompted — without this, the other person will not be able to see or hear you.

    3

    Invite Someone to Your Meeting

    ~17s
Once your meeting has started, tap or click the meeting link or the Share button. Copy the meeting link and send it to the person you want to call — by text message, email, or any messaging app. When they click the link, they will join your meeting.
    4

Join a Meeting from a Link

    ~28s
When someone sends you a Google Meet link, tap or click the link. Your browser or the Meet app will open and show a preview screen. Check that your camera and microphone are working, then tap Join Now or Ask to Join. If the meeting organizer needs to approve you, a request will be sent to them.

    Warning

Only join Google Meet calls from people you know and trust. As with any video call invitation, be cautious about joining unexpected calls from unknown numbers or email addresses.

    5

Use the Controls During a Call

    ~28s
During a call, you will see a row of buttons at the bottom of the screen. The microphone icon mutes or unmutes your audio — tap it to mute yourself when you are not speaking to reduce background noise. The camera icon turns your video on or off. The red phone icon ends the call.

    Quick Tip

Quick Tip: If someone is having trouble hearing you, tap the three-dot menu and check your microphone settings. On a phone, also check that the speaker is not blocked.

    6

    Share Your Screen (Optional)

    ~18s
To show the other person what is on your screen — like a photo, a document, or a website — tap the three-dot menu during the call and look for Present Screen or Share Screen. Follow the prompts to choose what to share. This is useful for walking someone through something on your computer.

Google Meet is a free video calling service from Google. You can use it to have face-to-face conversations with friends and family anywhere in the world, hold virtual meetings, or join group calls with multiple people. It works on iPhone, Android phones, computers, and tablets.

You do not need to download an app to use Google Meet on a computer — it works directly in a web browser. On a phone or tablet, the free Google Meet app from the App Store or Google Play gives the best experience.

To use Google Meet, you need a Google account (Gmail is a Google account). Creating a Google account is free and takes only a few minutes if you do not have one already.

Google Meet is different from some other video calling apps in one important way: you can start a meeting and share a link with anyone. The other person only needs to click the link to join — they do not need to have Google Meet installed or even a Google account in some cases. This makes it very convenient for connecting with people who use different apps or services.

The free version of Google Meet supports video calls with up to 100 participants and calls of up to 60 minutes for group meetings (one-on-one calls between two people have no time limit). For most personal and family use, the free tier is more than enough.

Video calling does use internet data. A typical one-hour video call uses about 1–2 GB of data. Using Wi-Fi instead of mobile data is recommended for longer calls.
