    1

Open Google Maps and enter your destination

    ~15s
Open Google Maps on your phone. Tap the search bar and type your destination — a street address, a business name, or a landmark. Tap the destination from the suggestions, then tap the blue "Directions" button.
    2

    Switch to Transit mode

    ~22s
After tapping Directions, look at the row of icons near the top: Car, Transit (train icon), Walking, Cycling, and Ride. Tap the train icon (labeled "Transit"). Google Maps switches to showing public transportation options.

    Quick Tip

Quick Tip: Make sure your starting location is correct at the top of the screen. It defaults to your current GPS location — tap it if you need to change the starting point.

    3

    Review transit options

    ~22s
Google Maps shows several route options, each listing: total travel time, number of transfers, which transit lines are used, departure time (or next available), and estimated arrival. Tap each option to see full step-by-step details. Choose the route that best fits your schedule and walking comfort.

    Quick Tip

Look for routes marked with the fewest transfers — especially if you are new to the transit system or have mobility limitations.

    4

    Follow the step-by-step directions

    ~29s
Tap "Start" on your chosen route. Google Maps guides you through each step: walk to the stop, wait for the bus/train (with the exact route number and direction), board, ride a specified number of stops, exit at the right stop, transfer if needed, then walk to your final destination. The app alerts you as you approach your stop.

    Warning

Keep an eye on the notifications — Google Maps will alert you when it is almost time to get off. Do not rely solely on counting stops; delays can shift the sequence.

    5

Check real-time departures at a stop

    ~16s
Tap the bus or train stop icon on the Google Maps screen to see real-time departures for that stop — which routes stop there and when the next buses or trains arrive. This is helpful for planning even without a specific destination in mind.

Google Maps is not just for driving directions. It has detailed public transit directions for thousands of cities — showing you exactly which bus to take, where to board, how many stops to ride, where to transfer, and step-by-step walking directions between the transit and your destination.

This is useful if you do not drive, are visiting a city unfamiliar to you, want to avoid parking costs, or are trying to use a commuter rail or subway system for the first time.

Google Maps real-time transit data includes: - Which buses and trains serve a route - Current departure times (often synced with real-time vehicle tracking) - Transfer instructions (get off Bus 12 at Main St., walk 3 minutes, board Train 4) - Live alerts for delays, route changes, or disruptions - Fare estimates (in some cities)

In the US, most major cities have full transit data in Google Maps, including city bus systems, subways (New York, Chicago, DC, LA, San Francisco, Boston), commuter rail, light rail, and some ferry services. Smaller cities and rural areas may have limited or no transit data.

Google Maps transit directions work offline if you have downloaded the area map ahead of time (though real-time arrivals require internet).
