How to Set Up the Google Home App

Google Home is the app that controls all your Google smart home devices — speakers, displays, lights, thermostats, and cameras — from one place.

    1

Download Google Home and sign in

    ~15s
Search "Google Home" in the App Store or Google Play. Download the app and sign in with your Google (Gmail) account.
    2

    Add your first device

    ~18s
Tap the "+" button in the top-left corner → "Set up device." Choose "New device" if you are adding a brand new Google product. The app guides you through plugging in the device and connecting it to Wi-Fi.

    Quick Tip

Have your Wi-Fi password handy — you will need to enter it during device setup.

    3

    Assign devices to rooms

    ~15s
During setup, or afterward by long-pressing a device tile, assign each device to a room. Create rooms like "Living Room," "Kitchen," or "Bedroom." This lets you control all devices in a room with one voice command.
    4

Use the app to control devices manually

    ~15s
The main screen shows tiles for each device. Tap a speaker tile to play music. Tap a light tile to toggle it on or off. Tap a camera tile to view the live feed.
    5

    Create a morning routine

    ~15s
Tap "Automations" at the bottom → "+" → "Automate" → "Create Routine." Set a trigger (time, sunrise, or a voice command) and choose actions (turn on lights, play music, read weather). Tap "Save."

Google Home is a free app that serves as the control center for Google-made devices (Nest speakers, Nest displays, Nest cameras, Nest thermostats) and compatible smart home devices from other brands. If you have any Google smart home products, you need this app to set them up and control them.

    What Google Home controls

: - Google Nest speakers (Mini, Audio) — music, news, timers, answers - Google Nest Displays (Hub, Hub Max) — visual info, video calls, home control - Nest thermostats — temperature scheduling - Nest cameras — security monitoring and motion alerts - Compatible smart bulbs, plugs, locks, and garage door openers from brands like Philips Hue, TP-Link, and Chamberlain

    Rooms and automation

: Organize devices by room in the app (Living Room speaker, Kitchen display, Bedroom TV) so you can control a whole room at once. Voice commands like "Hey Google, turn off the living room" work once devices are organized in rooms.

    Automations

: Set up routines — for example, say "Hey Google, good morning" and have it turn on the lights, read your calendar, and play the news. Or set lights to turn on automatically at sunset.

The Google Home app requires a Google account (Gmail) and works on iPhone and Android.
