Understanding Gmail's Category Tabs (Primary, Social, Promotions)

Gmail automatically sorts your email into tabs — Primary, Social, Promotions, and more. Here's how the system works and how to customize it.

    1

    Find the Other Inbox Tabs

    ~26s
Open Gmail. Look above your email list for tabs at the top: "Primary," "Social," "Promotions," "Updates," "Forums." (On mobile, you may need to swipe left to see all tabs.) Click each tab to see the emails sorted into that category.

    Quick Tip

If you do not see tabs, Gmail may have them hidden. On the computer, go to the gear icon → "See all settings" → "Inbox" tab → under "Inbox type," select "Default" and check the categories you want to display.

    2

Move an Email to a Different Tab

    ~22s
On a computer, right-click any email. Select "Move to tab" → choose the destination tab. You see a prompt asking if you want all future emails from that sender to go to that tab — click "Yes" to train Gmail.

    Quick Tip

On mobile, tap and hold the email → select "Move to" → choose the tab. The same option to always move that sender appears.

    3

Check Promotions Tab for Missing Emails

    ~15s
If you expected an email (a receipt, shipping confirmation, or newsletter) but it is not in Primary, click the Promotions or Updates tab. Retailers and automated services almost always end up in Promotions. The email is there — just in a different tab.
    4

Disable Tabs for a Traditional Inbox

    ~21s
In Gmail on a computer, click the gear icon → "See all settings" → "Inbox" tab. Under "Categories," uncheck all boxes except Primary (or all categories). Click "Save Changes." All emails now arrive in a single Primary inbox without sorting.

    Warning

Disabling tabs means promotional and social emails mix with personal emails in your Primary inbox. Your inbox may feel more cluttered without tab filtering.

    5

    Enable or Disable Specific Tabs

    ~15s
You do not have to enable all tabs or disable all tabs. Many users keep only "Primary" and "Promotions" active — this separates marketing emails while keeping everything else together. In the SettingsInboxCategories section, check or uncheck individual tabs.

Gmail automatically sorts incoming email into separate tabs at the top of your inbox: Primary (important personal email), Social (notifications from Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn), Promotions (deals, newsletters, and marketing email), Updates (bills, receipts, account confirmations), and Forums (messages from mailing lists or online groups).

The goal of this system is to reduce inbox clutter by keeping marketing and social notifications separate from emails that actually need your attention. The Primary tab is where email from real people — friends, family, doctors, banks — usually ends up.

Many people do not realize that emails are landing in the Promotions or Updates tab and assume they never received them. If you are missing emails from stores, airlines, subscription services, or automated confirmations, check those tabs — the emails are there, just sorted.

The tab system can be enabled or disabled, and you can move specific senders from one tab to another. If a store's emails keep going to Promotions but you want them in Primary, you can right-click the email and tell Gmail to move it.

You can also disable tabs you find confusing. Many users prefer a traditional single-inbox view where all emails arrive in one stream. This is easy to configure in Gmail settings.

Even with tabs enabled, the search function in Gmail finds emails across all tabs — you do not need to know which tab an email is in to find it.
