How to Manage Spam and Unwanted Email in Gmail

Take back your inbox. Learn how to block senders, unsubscribe from mailing lists, report spam, and set up filters so only the emails you want get through.

    1

    Use the One-Click Unsubscribe

    ~24s
Open any marketing or newsletter email in Gmail. Look just below the sender's name — there is often a small "Unsubscribe" link in gray text. Click it. Gmail shows a confirmation — click "Unsubscribe." The company must honor this request within 10 business days by law.

    Quick Tip

If there is no Unsubscribe link at the top, scroll to the very bottom of the email — it is almost always there in small print.

    2

    Mark Suspicious Emails as Spam

    ~22s
For emails from unknown senders or anything that looks like a scam: open the email, then click the three-dot menu (⋯) in the top right corner. Select "Report spam." The email moves to your Spam folder and Gmail learns to filter similar messages in the future.

    Warning

Never click "Unsubscribe" in a suspicious email. This confirms your email address to spammers and often results in more junk mail.

    3

    Block a Specific Sender

    ~15s
Open an email from someone you never want to hear from again. Click the three-dot menu in the top right. Select "Block [sender name]." All future emails from that address go directly to your Spam folder — they will never reach your inbox.
    4

Create a Filter to Automatically Sort Emails

    ~24s
In Gmail, click the search bar at the top and click "Show search options" (the sliders icon). Enter the sender's email address or a keyword in the "From" or "Has the words" field. Click "Create filter." Choose an action: Skip inbox, Mark as read, Delete it, or Label it. Click "Create filter."

    Quick Tip

Filters run on future emails — they do not apply retroactively to existing emails in your inbox.

    5

    Check Your Spam Folder Monthly

    ~18s
Click "Spam" in the left sidebar of Gmail. Scan through for any legitimate emails that ended up there by mistake — this happens occasionally. If you find a real email in spam, open it and click "Not spam" to move it back to your inbox and teach Gmail it is legitimate.

A cluttered inbox full of promotional emails, spam, and mailing lists you never signed up for is one of the most common frustrations with email. Gmail has powerful built-in tools to clean this up — and once you spend 20 minutes going through these steps, your inbox can stay organized with very little ongoing effort.

Gmail uses automatic spam filtering that sends obvious spam to your Spam folder. But a lot of unwanted email still makes it to your main inbox — marketing emails, newsletters you signed up for once and forgot, automated notifications from services, and promotional messages.

There are three main strategies for a cleaner Gmail inbox. The first is unsubscribing from mailing lists directly — Gmail makes this very convenient with a one-click "Unsubscribe" button at the top of most promotional emails. The second is marking messages as spam so Gmail learns what you do not want. The third is blocking individual senders so you never hear from them again.

For emails from legitimate companies you do not want to hear from anymore, always unsubscribe rather than just deleting. Deleting teaches Gmail nothing. Unsubscribing stops the emails at the source.

For emails from unknown or suspicious senders — possible scams or phishing attempts — report them as spam rather than unsubscribing. Clicking "Unsubscribe" on a scam email confirms your email address is active and can result in more spam. Instead, use Gmail's "Report spam" button.

Gmail filters let you automatically sort, label, or delete emails from specific senders or with specific keywords — a powerful tool once you know how to use them.
