A cluttered inbox full of promotional emails, spam, and mailing lists you never signed up for is one of the most common frustrations with email. Gmail has powerful built-in tools to clean this up — and once you spend 20 minutes going through these steps, your inbox can stay organized with very little ongoing effort.
Gmail uses automatic spam filtering that sends obvious spam to your Spam folder. But a lot of unwanted email still makes it to your main inbox — marketing emails, newsletters you signed up for once and forgot, automated notifications from services, and promotional messages.
There are three main strategies for a cleaner Gmail inbox. The first is unsubscribing from mailing lists directly — Gmail makes this very convenient with a one-click "Unsubscribe" button at the top of most promotional emails. The second is marking messages as spam so Gmail learns what you do not want. The third is blocking individual senders so you never hear from them again.
For emails from legitimate companies you do not want to hear from anymore, always unsubscribe rather than just deleting. Deleting teaches Gmail nothing. Unsubscribing stops the emails at the source.
For emails from unknown or suspicious senders — possible scams or phishing attempts — report them as spam rather than unsubscribing. Clicking "Unsubscribe" on a scam email confirms your email address is active and can result in more spam. Instead, use Gmail's "Report spam" button.
Gmail filters let you automatically sort, label, or delete emails from specific senders or with specific keywords — a powerful tool once you know how to use them.
