If you have used Gmail for a few years, your inbox probably has thousands of emails. Finding a specific one from six months ago can feel impossible — unless you know how to search effectively.
Gmail's search bar does much more than find emails containing a word. You can filter by who sent it, when it was sent, what the subject line was, whether it has an attachment, and more. These search shortcuts are called operators and they work like special commands.
The good news: you do not need to memorize all the operators. Gmail also has a "Search options" panel — a small arrow or icon in the search bar that opens a form where you fill in the fields visually. This is perfect if you prefer not to type commands.
For most everyday searches, two or three simple operators are enough. Knowing how to search by sender and date range alone will find almost any email you are looking for.
All Gmail search operators work the same whether you are on a computer, phone, or tablet. The search bar is always at the top of the Gmail app or website.
