Find and open Gemini on your phone

    ~25s
On an Android phone, look for the Gemini app in your app drawer — it has a colorful sparkle icon. If you do not see it, open the Google Play Store and search for "Google Gemini" to install it. On an iPhone, open the Google app (or download it from the App Store) and tap the Gemini tab at the bottom of the screen. Sign in with your Google account to get started.
    2

    Ask your first question

    ~32s
Tap the message box at the bottom of the screen and type your question in plain, conversational English. You can also tap the microphone icon to speak your question out loud. Gemini will respond within a few seconds. Try something straightforward to start, like asking it to explain a news story you heard, or asking for a recipe idea based on ingredients you have at home.

    Quick Tip

Quick Tip: Gemini is good at helping with writing tasks. Ask it to "help me write a thank-you note to my doctor" or "help me reply to this email" and paste the text you received.

    3

Analyze a photo by tapping the camera or image icon

    ~33s
Tap the image icon (it looks like a photo or mountain) next to the message bar. You can take a new photo with your camera or choose one from your photo library. After uploading the image, type a question about it. For example, you might upload a photo of a rash and ask what might cause it, or photograph a product label and ask what the ingredients mean. Keep in mind that Gemini is not a doctor — use this for general information only.

    Warning

Do not rely on Gemini for medical diagnoses. Always consult a licensed doctor for health concerns.

    4

Use Gemini to help with Gmail drafts

    ~32s
Open the Gmail app on your Android phone and start composing a new email. Look for the small Gemini or sparkle icon inside the compose window. Tap it and describe the email you want to write. For example: "Write a polite email asking my landlord to fix the leaky faucet." Gemini will draft the email for you, and you can edit it before sending.

    Quick Tip

Quick Tip: Gemini's Gmail integration works best on Android phones where Gemini is set as the default assistant. iPhone users can draft text in the Gemini app and paste it into Gmail manually.

    5

Set Gemini as your default assistant on Android

    ~22s
On your Android phone, open the Settings app and search for "Default apps" or "Digital assistant app." Tap on it and select Gemini from the list. After this change, holding down the home button or pressing and holding the power button (depending on your phone model) will open Gemini instead of Google Assistant. This makes Gemini available instantly anytime you need quick help.
    6

    Review your privacy settings

    ~22s
Open the Gemini app and tap your profile picture or the menu icon in the top corner. Look for "Gemini Apps Activity" in your Google account settings. Here you can see what conversations have been saved and turn off activity saving if you prefer your conversations not to be stored. Google uses saved conversations to improve its AI, but you are not required to keep this on.

Google Gemini is Google's AI assistant — think of it as a very knowledgeable helper that you can have a conversation with. You can ask it questions, ask it to help you write something, describe what is in a photo, or get help with tasks inside Google apps like Gmail and Google Docs.

Gemini is available as a free app on Android phones, and iPhone users can access it through the Google app. On many newer Android phones, Gemini is already installed. On some Android phones, you can set Gemini as your default assistant so it activates when you hold down the home button, replacing Google Assistant.

What makes Gemini different from a regular Google search is that it holds a conversation. You do not just get a list of links — you get a real response, and you can ask follow-up questions. Gemini also connects to your Google account, which means it can help you draft replies in Gmail, summarize documents in Google Docs, and look up information from your Google Calendar if you allow it.

You can also point your phone's camera at something and ask Gemini about it. Take a photo of a plant and ask what it is. Take a picture of a menu in a foreign language and ask what the dishes are. This makes Gemini especially useful when you are out in the world and need quick information.

The free version of Gemini runs on Google's standard AI model. A paid Gemini Advanced subscription gives access to more powerful AI models and additional features, but most everyday tasks work fine on the free version. Your conversations are associated with your Google account, so review the privacy settings if you want to limit what Google stores.
