How to Free Up iCloud Storage Space Without Paying for More

When your iCloud storage is full, your iPhone stops backing up — here's how to clear space for free instead of upgrading to a paid plan.

    1

See what is using your iCloud storage

    ~24s
Go to Settings → your name → iCloud → "Manage Account Storage" (or "Manage Storage"). You will see a breakdown of everything using your iCloud: Backups (usually the largest), Photos, Messages, and individual apps. Tap "Backups" to see backups from all your devices — if you have an old iPhone listed that you no longer own, delete that backup. Tap the old device → "Delete Backup" to reclaim that space immediately.
    2

    Delete old device backups

    ~33s
Each iPhone backup stored in iCloud can be 2–8 GB or more. If you replaced your phone and the old backup is still sitting in iCloud, deleting it is the fastest way to free significant space. Go to Settings → your name → iCloudManage StorageBackups → tap any backup for a device you no longer own → "Delete Backup." The current device's backup is the one with today's or yesterday's date — keep that one.

    Quick Tip

After deleting old backups, your current iPhone backup will still work normally. You are only deleting records from old devices that you no longer use.

    3

Reduce the size of your iPhone backup

    ~29s
Go to Settings → your name → iCloudManage StorageBackups → your current iPhone. You will see a list of apps and how much backup space each one uses. Toggle off any apps that do not need to be backed up — game apps, streaming apps, and apps that store data on their own servers (like Spotify or Netflix) are safe to exclude. Turning off iCloud backup for your Photos is not recommended since that is often the most important data to protect.
    4

Move photos to Google Photos to free iCloud space

    ~38s
If photos are your main storage drain, consider backing them up to Google Photos instead of (or in addition to) iCloud. Google Photos gives 15 GB free — three times more than iCloud's free tier. Download the Google Photos app, sign in with your Google account, and enable backup. Once your photos are backed up to Google Photos, you can turn off iCloud Photos (Settings → your name → iCloudPhotos → toggle off). This can free several gigabytes of iCloud space.

    Warning

Only turn off iCloud Photos after confirming all your photos have fully backed up to Google Photos. Open Google Photos and check that recent photos appear before making any changes to iCloud settings.
