The Amazon Fire tablet is one of the most affordable tablets available — starting around $50 to $100 — and it is designed with simplicity in mind. It runs a version of Android customized by Amazon, with a home screen that shows your recently used content and a grid of apps. If you are already an Amazon customer, it connects smoothly with your Amazon account, Prime Video, Kindle books, Audible audiobooks, and Amazon Music.
Setting up your Fire tablet takes about 15 to 20 minutes. The main steps are connecting to your home Wi-Fi network, signing in with your Amazon account (or creating one for free), and choosing a few preferences. Amazon has made the setup process very straightforward with on-screen guidance.
The Fire tablet's app store is called the Amazon Appstore. It has a good selection of popular apps — YouTube, Netflix, Hulu, Facebook, email apps, and many more — though it does not have every app that appears in Apple's App Store or Google Play. Most apps that are commonly used are available.
The Fire tablet is particularly well suited for watching videos, reading books, video calling with family, browsing the web, and playing casual games. The screen size (7 inches on the basic model, 10 or 11 inches on larger models) makes it comfortable for reading and watching — easier on the eyes than a small phone screen.
The battery typically lasts 8 to 12 hours of regular use, so charging it once a day or every other day is usually sufficient. It charges via a USB-C cable (on newer models) or micro-USB (on older models).
