How to Find Electric Vehicle Charging Stations

Use free apps like PlugShare and ChargePoint to locate nearby EV charging stations, check availability, and plan road trips.

    1

    Download PlugShare or ChargePoint

    ~15s
Open the App Store or Play Store, search for "PlugShare" or "ChargePoint," and install one or both. PlugShare shows chargers from every network; ChargePoint mainly shows its own.
    2

    Create a free account

    ~15s
Sign up with email to save favorite chargers and filter by plug type. Tesla owners should also download the Tesla app to see Superchargers.
    3

    Filter by plug type

    ~15s
In PlugShare, tap the filter icon and pick your connector — usually J1772 for Level 2, CCS or NACS for fast charging, or Tesla. This hides stations your car cannot use.
    4

    Check real-time status

    ~15s
Tap a charger on the map to see if the plugs are free or in use right now. Read recent check-ins from other drivers to learn if the station works reliably.
    5

Plan road trips with the trip planner

    ~15s
Both apps have a trip planner that maps chargers along your route. Enter your start, end, and car model, and it will suggest stops based on your battery range.

Finding a place to charge an electric vehicle (EV) has gotten much easier thanks to free apps that show every public charger in the country. The two most popular are PlugShare and ChargePoint, and both work on iPhone and Android.

These apps show which chargers are available right now, how fast they charge, what it costs, and what real drivers say about the location. Some EV brands like Tesla have their own built-in navigation that finds Supercharger stations automatically.
