Facebook Groups are communities within Facebook where people with a shared interest or connection gather to post, share, and discuss. Unlike your regular Facebook feed (which shows updates from friends and family), a Group is specifically about one topic — your local neighborhood, a medical condition support network, a hobby like quilting or woodworking, a sports team, a church community, or alumni from a school.
Groups can be Public (anyone can see the posts without joining) or Private (you need to join to see the content, and sometimes need an admin's approval). Most active support and interest groups are Private because members feel more comfortable sharing when it's not visible to the entire internet.
Finding groups is straightforward. In the Facebook app, tap the three horizontal lines (the menu icon) and then tap Groups. Facebook will suggest groups based on your location, interests, and what your friends have joined. You can also use the main Search bar at the top of Facebook to search for any topic followed by the word "group" — like "diabetes support group" or "Phoenix Arizona gardening."
When you find a group that interests you, tap Join Group. For Private groups, you'll sometimes be asked a few questions (like "What brings you to this group?") before an admin approves your membership. This review process helps groups stay relevant and spam-free.
Once you're in, take a moment to read the pinned post or group rules, usually posted at the top. Rules vary — some groups only allow certain types of posts, others ban advertising or require members to introduce themselves first.
Posting in a group is the same as posting on your personal Facebook page: tap the text box that says "Write something" and type your update, question, or photo caption. Other members will see it and can comment.
Managing your group notifications is worth doing early — active groups can generate dozens of notifications per day. In the group, tap the bell icon and change from "All Posts" to "Highlights" or "Friends' Posts" so you only hear about the most important activity.
