    1

Download and create a free account

    ~15s
Search "EveryDollar" in the App Store or Google Play and install the free app. Tap "Create Account" and enter your email and a password. The basic version is completely free — you will be offered a premium trial but you can skip it.
    2

    Set up your income

    ~19s
Tap "Add Income" and enter how much you expect to bring in this month. If your income varies, use a conservative estimate (a little lower than average). Include all sources: paycheck, Social Security, pension, side income, etc.

    Quick Tip

Your income is the starting point. The goal is to "spend" every dollar of it on paper before the month begins.

    3

    Create budget categories

    ~20s
The app suggests common categories: Housing, Food, Transportation, Insurance, Health, Personal, Giving, Saving, and Debt. Tap each one to enter how much you plan to spend in that category this month. Adjust amounts until your Remaining balance reaches $0.

    Quick Tip

Quick Tip: Start with fixed bills (rent, utilities, car payment), then fill in flexible categories like groceries and entertainment with what is left.

    4

Add your spending throughout the month

    ~15s
Each time you spend money, open EveryDollar and tap the "+" button in the relevant category. Enter the amount. The app will subtract it from your budget for that category and show you what is left. This takes about 10 seconds per transaction.
    5

Review your budget at month end

    ~21s
At the end of the month, tap each category to see planned vs. actual spending. Note where you went over and where you had money left over. Use this information to adjust next month's budget to be more realistic.

    Warning

The free version requires you to enter expenses manually. This takes a few minutes each week but also builds helpful spending awareness.

EveryDollar is a budgeting app created by Ramsey Solutions (the people behind financial educator Dave Ramsey). The core idea is called "zero-based budgeting" — before the month starts, you assign every dollar you expect to earn to a specific category (rent, groceries, phone bill, entertainment, savings, etc.) until the total reaches zero.

This does not mean spending everything you earn. It means every dollar has a planned purpose — including the dollars you put into savings or an emergency fund.

The free version of EveryDollar lets you manually create a budget, add income and expenses, and track your progress throughout the month. A paid version ($17.99/month or $79.99/year) connects to your bank accounts to import transactions automatically.

EveryDollar is available as a free app on iPhone and Android, and also at everydollar.com on a computer. You can start your first budget in about 15 minutes.

Many people find that simply writing down where they plan to spend money — before spending it — helps them stay within their means and feel less stressed about finances. You do not have to follow Dave Ramsey's philosophy to get value from the app.
