Most grocery stores, pharmacies, coffee shops, and retailers have loyalty or rewards programs — and most of us carry a pile of plastic cards or key fob tags to use them. Your iPhone or Android phone can store all of these digitally, accessible in seconds at checkout without digging through a wallet.
Both Apple Wallet (iPhone) and Google Wallet (Android) support loyalty and membership cards from thousands of retailers. You scan the barcode on your physical card to add it, or enter the card number, and from then on you can pull it up at checkout just like you would a credit card.
Target, CVS, Walgreens, Kroger, Safeway, Costco, Marriott, Delta, American Airlines, and most major retailers support digital loyalty cards in the phone wallets. Many retailers also have their own apps that work at checkout — but adding cards to Apple or Google Wallet is more convenient because everything lives in one place rather than requiring you to switch between multiple apps.
In Apple Wallet, you can organize passes so the most relevant ones appear at the top. Some passes are smart — a boarding pass appears automatically when you're near the airport, or a coffee shop card appears when you're near that store.
This is also useful for membership cards: library cards, gym memberships, and even health insurance cards (some insurers now offer this). Check if your specific card issuer supports Wallet integration.
Adding cards to your Wallet doesn't replace your physical cards — you can keep them as backups. But over time, you'll likely find you rarely need to bring a physical loyalty wallet anymore.
