How to Use Digital Coupons at Grocery Stores

Most major grocery stores now offer digital coupons you clip on their app or website — saving money without cutting paper coupons or carrying a clipping folder.

    1

    Download your store's app

    ~18s
Search for your grocery store by name in the App Store or Google Play Store and install the free app. Examples: "Kroger," "Safeway," "Albertsons," "Publix," "Giant." Sign in or create a free account using your email address. You'll need to link your existing loyalty card number or create a new loyalty card through the app.
    2

    Find and clip digital coupons

    ~29s
Look for "Coupons" or "Digital Coupons" in the app's bottom navigation or menu. You'll see a list of current offers — usually 100+ at any time. Each coupon shows the discount and which product it applies to. Tap "Clip" or "Add" next to any coupon you want. Clipped coupons are saved to your loyalty card.

    Quick Tip

Quick Tip: Browse coupons before making your shopping list. You may find great deals on things you already planned to buy — or spot a discount that changes what you decide to pick up.

    3

    Check for personalized offers

    ~15s
Most store apps also show "Personalized Deals" or "Just for U" offers — discounts on products you buy frequently. These are often deeper discounts than the general coupons. Check this section separately as these offers aren't always mixed with the main coupon list.
    4

Use your loyalty card at checkout

    ~19s
At the store checkout, scan your loyalty card (physical card or the barcode in the app under "My Card" or "Scan Card"). All your clipped coupons automatically deduct from your total — you don't need to show or hand over anything. The discount appears on the checkout screen as each qualifying item is scanned.
    5

Check the weekly ad for more savings

    ~15s
The app's "Weekly Ad" section shows this week's sales — usually 50–100 discounted items. Many weekly ad prices are only available with your loyalty card. Before shopping, spend 2 minutes browsing the weekly ad and building your list around what's on sale.

Paper coupons used to mean sitting with scissors and a Sunday newspaper. Today, every major grocery chain — Kroger, Safeway/Albertsons, Publix, Giant, Stop & Shop, Food Lion, Harris Teeter, and many others — offers digital coupons through their app or website. You "clip" them with a tap on your phone, and the discounts apply automatically at checkout when you scan your loyalty card.

Digital coupons require no scissors, no forgotten coupons in the car, and no checking expiration dates on paper slips. You can browse offers before you go to the store, add them to your card in 30 seconds, and save $5–$20 per trip if you shop the deals.

This guide uses Kroger as the example (the same process works at Kroger-owned stores like Fred Meyer, Ralph's, Fry's, Harris Teeter, Smith's, and others), but the steps are nearly identical at competing chains.
