Copy and paste is one of the most useful phone skills — save typing the same thing twice. Here's how to select text, copy it, and paste it anywhere.

    Select text on iPhone

    ~27s
Press and hold on the word you want to copy. After about one second, the word becomes highlighted with two blue handles on each side, and a menu appears above it with options like "Cut," "Copy," and "Paste." To select more text, drag the left or right handle to expand the selection to cover the full phrase or paragraph you want.

    Quick Tip

To select all text in a text field at once, tap inside the field and then tap "Select All" from the menu.

Copy the selected text on iPhone

    ~15s
Once the text you want is highlighted, tap "Copy" in the floating menu above it. The selected text is now saved to your clipboard (temporary memory). The highlight goes away and nothing else visibly changes, but the text is ready to paste.

    Paste on iPhone

    ~24s
Go to where you want to insert the text — a text message, an email, a search box, or a form field. Tap and hold inside the text area for a moment. When the menu appears, tap "Paste." The copied text appears immediately.

    Quick Tip

On iPhone, if you copy something and then take too long to paste it, the clipboard clears after you copy something new. You can only hold one thing at a time.

Select and copy text on Android

    ~21s
Press and hold on the word you want. A highlight appears and a menu shows "Cut," "Copy," "Paste," and more. Drag the handles to adjust your selection, then tap "Copy."

    Warning

On Android, the exact look of the menu depends on your phone brand. Samsung, Google Pixel, and others may look slightly different, but "Copy" and "Paste" options will always be there.

    Paste on Android

    ~15s
Tap and hold inside the text box where you want to paste. Tap "Paste" from the menu that appears. Your copied text is inserted. Some Android keyboards also show a clipboard button that lets you paste recent items, even from a minute or two ago.

Copying and pasting text on a phone is one of the most helpful skills to know — once you get the hang of it, you'll use it all the time. It lets you take text from one place (like an address in an email) and paste it somewhere else (like Google Maps) without retyping everything.

On a phone, you can't use keyboard shortcuts like Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V the way you do on a computer. Instead, you tap and hold on text to select it, then choose options from a menu that pops up.

Here are some everyday situations where copy and paste saves time: - You receive a meeting link in a text message and need to open it in a browser - Someone sends you an address and you want to paste it into Google Maps - You want to copy your own phone number or email from one app and paste it into a form - You need to share a long quote or website address without retyping it - You want to move text from a note to a text message

The process is slightly different between iPhones and Android phones, but both follow the same basic idea: press and hold to select, then use the "Copy" and "Paste" options that appear.

On iPhone, selected text shows blue handles on both sides — drag those handles to expand or shrink your selection. On Android, you'll see similar handles, often in a different color depending on your phone's brand.
