Create a free account at claude.ai

    ~15s
Go to claude.ai in any web browser, or download the Claude app on your phone. Click Sign Up and use your email or Google account. The free tier is available immediately after signing up.
    2

    Start a conversation

    ~21s
Type your question or request in the message bar and press Enter or tap the send button. You can ask Claude to explain something, help write a message, or give you step-by-step instructions on a task.

    Quick Tip

Be specific about what you need. Instead of "help me write an email," try "help me write a polite email to my landlord asking to fix the heating before winter."

    3

    Upload a document for analysis

    ~15s
Click the paperclip or attachment icon to upload a PDF or Word document. Then ask specific questions about it: "What is the payment due date?" or "Summarize the key points in plain English."
    4

    Use Projects to stay organized

    ~15s
Click New Project in the sidebar to create a separate conversation space for a topic (like a home project or helping a family member). Claude will remember the context within a project across separate sessions.
    5

    Adjust privacy settings

    ~15s
Go to Settings > Privacy to turn off the option that allows your conversations to be used for model training, if that matters to you. Your conversations are not shared publicly regardless of this setting.

Claude is an AI assistant built by a company called Anthropic. Like ChatGPT, you can have a conversation with Claude in plain English and it will help you with an enormous range of tasks — drafting emails, explaining confusing documents, summarizing long articles, answering questions, brainstorming ideas, and much more.

Claude has developed a reputation for being particularly careful and nuanced in its responses. Where some AI assistants give a confident answer even when they're uncertain, Claude tends to acknowledge what it doesn't know and flag when a question would be better answered by a professional. It's also very good at handling long documents, like a lease agreement, a medical report, or a lengthy letter, and pulling out the key points you need to pay attention to.

To get started, go to claude.ai in a web browser on your phone or computer. You can also download the Claude app from the App Store (iPhone) or Google Play (Android). Create a free account using your email or your Google account.

The free tier gives you a generous number of messages per day with Claude. Claude Pro, at about $20 per month, gives you higher message limits, priority access when the service is busy, and the ability to work with very long documents (up to about 200,000 words at once — roughly the length of a full novel).

To start a conversation, type your request in the message bar. Some practical uses: paste a confusing letter from your insurance company and ask Claude to explain it in plain English; paste a recipe and ask it to scale the ingredients for a larger group; describe a problem you're having with a device and ask for troubleshooting steps; draft a response to a difficult email you need to write.

One of Claude's most practical features is document analysis. Click the paperclip or attachment icon and upload a PDF — a bank statement, a medical summary, a contract, a bill — and then ask Claude specific questions about it. For example: "What is the monthly premium?" or "Are there any fees if I cancel?" or "What does this medical term mean?"

Projects let you create separate ongoing conversations for different topics — one for recipes, one for a home renovation project, one for helping with a grandchild's school assignment. Each project keeps its context separate so Claude doesn't mix them up.

Privacy note: Anthropic uses conversations to improve Claude by default. You can opt out of this in your account settings under Privacy. Conversations are not shared publicly.

Claude is a powerful tool for thinking through problems and handling writing tasks. As with any AI, don't rely on it for medical diagnoses, legal decisions, or financial advice without checking with a qualified professional.
