How to Set Up Multiple Profiles in Chrome

Chrome profiles let different family members have their own bookmarks, passwords, and browsing history — great for sharing a computer without mixing up accounts.

    1

Open the profile menu in Chrome

    ~15s
Open Chrome. In the top-right corner, find the circular profile icon (it might show a letter or a photo). Click it. A menu appears showing "Other people" at the bottom and a gear icon.
    2

    Add a new profile

    ~15s
In the profile menu, click "+ Add" or "Add another account." A new Chrome window opens with a setup screen. Name the profile (e.g., "Dad," "Margaret," or "Work").
    3

    Choose a color theme (optional)

    ~18s
Pick a color theme for the new profile. This color-codes the browser window so you always know at a glance which profile is active.

    Quick Tip

Use a distinct color for each profile — blue for one person, green for another. You will immediately see which profile is active just by the browser color.

    4

    Sign in to Google (optional)

    ~15s
Chrome will offer to sign in with a Google account. Signing in syncs bookmarks and passwords across devices. If this is a shared guest profile, skip signing in.
    5

    Switch between profiles

    ~15s
Click the circular profile icon in the top-right of Chrome. All profiles appear in the menu. Click any name to switch. Each profile opens in its own Chrome window.

If more than one person uses the same computer, Chrome profiles let each person have a completely separate browsing environment. Each profile has its own bookmarks, saved passwords, browsing history, extensions, and Chrome settings — entirely separate from other profiles.

This is useful when: - A spouse or partner also uses the same computer - A grandparent uses a child's or grandchild's computer - You want to keep work and personal browsing completely separate - A caregiver uses your computer and you prefer your bookmarks and passwords remain private

Switching between profiles takes one click. Each profile can be color-coded and named, so it is visually clear which profile is active.

Profiles also sync to your Google account. If you sign in to a profile with your Google account, your bookmarks and passwords appear on any other device where you sign into Chrome with the same account — your phone, tablet, another computer.

Creating a new profile does not affect existing ones. Your current setup — bookmarks, passwords, history — stays exactly as it is. The new profile starts completely fresh.

Note: Profiles are not the same as private/incognito mode. Private mode hides browsing from history but does not separate settings from your main profile. Profiles do separate everything.
