Your credit score (300-850) represents your creditworthiness. A higher score means better loan rates, easier apartment approvals, and sometimes lower insurance premiums. You can check it for free — no need to pay anyone.
Your bank or credit card company likely shows it for free. Chase, Bank of America, Capital One, Discover, and American Express all offer this. Log in and look for "Credit Score" or "FICO Score" on your dashboard.
Credit Karma is a free app showing TransUnion and Equifax scores, updated weekly, plus factors affecting your score. It makes money by recommending products — you do not have to buy anything. Experian offers a free FICO Score at experian.com with free monitoring.
Your score may vary 20-40 points between sources depending on the scoring model (FICO vs. VantageScore) and bureau. What matters is the range: 670+ is "Good," 740+ is "Very Good," 800+ is "Exceptional."
Checking your own score is a "soft inquiry" and does NOT lower it. Check as often as you want. The biggest factor in your score is payment history — paying on time accounts for 35%. Setting up auto-pay for at least minimum payments is one of the most effective ways to build and maintain a good score.
