ChatGPT is an AI assistant made by a company called OpenAI. You type a question or request in plain English, and it responds with a detailed, conversational answer. You do not need any technical knowledge to use it — if you can type a text message, you can use ChatGPT.
The free version of ChatGPT is available at chat.openai.com. You create a free account with your email address and start chatting immediately. There is also a ChatGPT app for iPhone and Android.
ChatGPT is genuinely useful for a wide range of everyday tasks that used to require a lot of research or asking someone for help. You can ask it to explain a confusing Medicare letter, write a complaint email to a company, give you a simple recipe with ingredients you already have, explain what a medical term means, or help you plan a trip.
The key to getting good results from ChatGPT is being specific. Instead of asking "Tell me about Medicare," ask "Explain what Medicare Part D covers for prescription drugs in plain English." The more detail you give, the more helpful the response.
ChatGPT is not the right tool for everything. It cannot make phone calls, book appointments, or access your personal accounts. It can give incorrect information — especially about recent events or very specific facts — so always verify important information. Never share personal information like your Social Security number or passwords with any AI tool.
The free version of ChatGPT (called ChatGPT 4o) is powerful enough for most everyday tasks. A paid version (ChatGPT Plus) exists but is not necessary for general use.
