    1

Find a video template in Canva

    ~43s
Sign in to your Canva account at canva.com. In the search bar at the top of the home screen, type "video" followed by your project type — for example, "Instagram Reels video," "birthday slideshow," or "LinkedIn video intro." Template results appear — scroll through and click any that look close to what you need. When you click a template, a preview shows you the animated version so you can see the transitions and style before committing. Click "Customize this template" to open it in the editor.

    Quick Tip

Quick Tip: The format of your video should match where you are publishing it. Instagram Reels and TikTok use vertical 9:16 format. YouTube uses horizontal 16:9. LinkedIn works with both. Choose the template format that matches your intended platform from the start — resizing later can misalign text and graphics.

    2

Replace placeholder images and video clips

    ~26s
The template opens in the Canva editor. Each slide or scene has placeholder images or video clips. Click on any placeholder image to select it. On the left panel, click "Uploads" and then "Upload Files" to add your own photos or videos from your computer. Once uploaded, drag your media onto the selected placeholder to replace it. Canva fits your image into the existing layout. Adjust the position by double-clicking the placed image and dragging within the frame.
    3

Edit text and add your own copy

    ~28s
Click on any text element in the template to select it. The current placeholder text is highlighted. Delete it and type your own. Change the font, size, and color using the toolbar that appears at the top of the editor. Bold text is more readable in short video clips, especially on mobile screens. Keep text short — no more than one to two lines per slide. Text that appears for less than three seconds should be even shorter because viewers cannot read long passages quickly.
    4

Add background music or sound effects

    ~44s
Click the "Audio" tab in the left sidebar. Canva's free library includes hundreds of music tracks and sound effects. Browse by mood — Upbeat, Calm, Cinematic, Happy — or search for a specific genre. Click any track to preview it. Drag it onto your timeline at the bottom of the editor to add it to the video. Adjust the volume by clicking the track in the timeline and using the volume slider. Set the audio to fade in at the start and fade out at the end using the checkboxes in the audio settings panel.

    Warning

Only use audio from Canva's built-in library or music you own the rights to. Uploading popular songs from your music library to Canva videos and then posting them on social media can result in your video being muted or removed due to copyright claims.

    5

    Preview and export your video

    ~29s
Click the Play button at the top of the editor to preview your video from the beginning. Watch the whole thing to check that transitions are smooth, text appears long enough to read, and the audio fits the mood. When you are satisfied, click "Share" in the top right corner and select "Download." Choose MP4 as the file format. Select the quality — 1080p for the highest quality. The video renders and downloads to your computer. From there, upload it directly to the social media platform of your choice.

Canva is primarily known as a graphic design tool, but it also includes a capable video editor that is well suited to creating social media content, slideshows, short promotional clips, and educational videos. If you already know how to use Canva for image designs, the video tools use the same interface — making the learning curve very short.

Canva's approach to video editing is template-based. You start from a pre-designed template — say, a birthday video slideshow, a product announcement for Instagram, or a professional LinkedIn intro clip — and swap out the placeholder content for your own photos, text, and footage. The layout, transitions, and timing are already set up for you. This makes it possible to produce a polished, on-brand video in thirty minutes even if you have never edited a video before.

The Canva video editor runs in your web browser and in the Canva iPhone and Android apps. A free Canva account gives you access to thousands of video templates and a large library of royalty-free music and sound effects. Canva Pro (a paid subscription) unlocks additional templates, a larger media library, background remover, and the ability to resize videos instantly for different platforms.

For more involved video projects — multi-camera shoots, complex color grading, or long-form content — a dedicated video editor like DaVinci Resolve or iMovie is a better choice. But for short social videos, announcement clips, and photo slideshows up to about five minutes, Canva's video editor is fast and produces clean results without any technical knowledge.
