How to Make Greeting Cards and Invitations with Canva

Create beautiful, personalized birthday cards, invitations, and thank-you notes using Canva's free templates — no design experience needed.

    1

Open Canva and find a template

    ~24s
Go to canva.com on your computer, or download the Canva app on your phone. Create a free account with your email or Google account. On the home screen, tap the search bar and type what you're looking for — for example, "birthday card," "party invitation," or "thank you card." You'll see hundreds of templates.

    Quick Tip

For printed cards, search specifically for "5x7 card" or "4x6 card" to find templates in standard greeting card sizes.

    2

    Choose a template

    ~15s
Browse the results and click on any template you like. Tap "Customize this template" to open it in the editor. Free templates are marked without any crown icon; templates with a gold crown icon require Canva Pro.
    3

    Edit the text

    ~24s
Click or tap on any text in the template to select it. Delete the placeholder text and type your own message — a name, date, greeting, or event details. Change the font size using the number at the top. Change the font style by clicking the font name at the top and browsing options.

    Quick Tip

Keep text large enough to read comfortably — at least 18pt for body text, 28pt or larger for titles and names.

    4

    Add your own photo (optional)

    ~18s
To add a personal photo, click the Images section in the left sidebar and tap "Upload." Select a photo from your phone or computer. Once uploaded, drag it into the template. Drag the corners to resize it, and drag it to reposition. Double-click the image to zoom and crop within its frame.
    5

    Download and print

    ~19s
When your card looks how you want it, click "Share" in the top right corner, then "Download." Choose "PDF Print" for the best quality when printing. Take the PDF to a print shop (Walgreens Photo, CVS, Staples) or print it at home. For digital sending, download as JPG or PNG and attach it to an email or text message.

Canva is a free design tool available on iPhone, Android, and the web. It has thousands of professionally designed templates for greeting cards, invitations, flyers, and more. You customize the text, photos, and colors to make them your own — even if you've never done graphic design before.

With Canva, you can make birthday cards for friends and family, create invitations for parties and gatherings, design thank-you cards, make holiday cards with family photos, create event flyers for a church or community group, and more.

Many people use Canva to create designs that they print at home or at a local print shop like Walgreens, CVS, or Office Depot. Others design cards to send digitally by email, text, or social media.

Canva is free for most features. Canva Pro ($15/month or $120/year) unlocks a larger premium template library, background remover, and more advanced tools — but the free version has thousands of excellent templates and is more than enough for cards and invitations.

Designs you create in Canva are saved to your account automatically, so you can edit them on your phone, tablet, or computer and pick up right where you left off.
