    1

    Enable iCloud Contacts on iPhone

    ~22s
Open Settings and tap your name. Tap iCloud. Find "Contacts" in the list and toggle it on. Your contacts will sync to iCloud automatically from this point forward. Verify at icloud.com by signing in and opening the Contacts section.

    Quick Tip

If Contacts was previously off and you turn it on, your phone may ask if you want to merge existing contacts with iCloud — choose Merge.

    2

Verify Google Contacts sync on Android

    ~19s
Open the Google Contacts app. Your contacts should appear with your Google account shown at the top. You can also visit contacts.google.com in a browser to confirm your contacts are there. If they do not appear, tap the profile icon in the Contacts app and check that you are signed into your Google account.
    3

    Export a VCF backup file

    ~16s
On iPhone: go to icloud.com, click Contacts, press Ctrl+A or +A to select all, click the gear icon, and choose "Export vCard." On Android: go to contacts.google.com, open the menu, click "Export," and download as VCF. Store this file on your computer or email it to yourself.
    4

Avoid storing contacts on your SIM card

    ~28s
If you are setting up a new phone, make sure contacts are syncing to Google or iCloud — not to the SIM card. In your Contacts settings, look for "Default account for new contacts" and set it to your Google or iCloud account rather than "SIM card" or "Phone."

    Warning

SIM cards hold very few contacts and cannot be backed up to the cloud. Contacts stored only on a SIM card are at high risk of being permanently lost if the SIM is damaged or lost.

Phone contacts represent years of relationships — family members, doctors, neighbors, friends, colleagues, and service providers. If your phone is lost or broken and your contacts were stored only on the device itself, they could be gone for good. The good news is that backing up your contacts takes only a few minutes, and once set up, it happens automatically from that point on.

On iPhone, contacts are backed up through iCloud. Open Settings, tap your name at the top, tap iCloud, and make sure the Contacts toggle is turned on. When this is active, your contacts sync to iCloud continuously — not just during backups, but in real time. You can verify this is working by visiting icloud.com on any computer, signing in, and clicking the Contacts icon. All your contacts should be visible there.

To export your contacts as a file (a VCF file, also called a vCard) from iCloud: go to icloud.com, click Contacts, select all contacts by pressing Command+A (Mac) or Ctrl+A (Windows), then click the gear icon in the bottom left and choose "Export vCard." This saves a file you can store on your computer or email to yourself as an extra backup.

On Android, contacts sync to your Google account automatically when you are signed in. Open the Google Contacts app and look at the top of your screen — it should show your Google account name, which means contacts are syncing. You can also check at contacts.google.com in a web browser and verify your contacts appear there.

To export Android contacts as a file: go to contacts.google.com, click the three-line menu on the left, choose "Export," and download as a VCF file. This file can be imported into almost any contact management system, including Outlook, Apple iCloud, or a new phone.

Samsung phones have an additional layer: the Samsung Contacts app can back up to Samsung Cloud as well as Google. Having contacts in both places provides extra insurance.

One important warning: do not store contacts on your SIM card. SIM cards have very limited storage — typically holding fewer than 250 contacts — and are not backed up by any cloud service. Always make sure your contacts are syncing to Google or iCloud instead of sitting on the SIM.
