Audible is an app from Amazon that lets you listen to audiobooks — professionally narrated recordings of books — on your phone, tablet, or computer. Instead of reading, you listen. You can enjoy audiobooks while driving, doing chores, going for a walk, or relaxing at home.
Audible is a subscription service that charges a monthly fee (around $15 per month as of 2026) and includes one credit per month to buy any audiobook. Your purchased audiobooks belong to you and stay in your library even if you cancel your subscription. Audible also includes Audible Plus, a catalog of audiobooks and podcasts available to stream at no extra cost with a membership.
If you have never used Audible before, Amazon typically offers a free trial period (usually 30 days) that includes one or two free audiobook credits. You can use the free trial to get started without any upfront cost, and you can cancel before the trial ends if you decide it is not for you.
You can also access Audible through an existing Amazon account, which most people already have. The app is free to download from the App Store or Google Play — you only pay for the subscription and the books.
For people who find reading on screens tiring, or who have difficulty reading small print, audiobooks can be a wonderful alternative. Many popular bestsellers, classic novels, self-help books, and biographies are available as audiobooks with excellent narrators.
