Apple Watch has two powerful safety features that can make a real difference in an emergency: Fall Detection and Emergency SOS. Fall Detection uses the watch's sensors to recognize the motion pattern of a hard fall. If it detects a fall and you do not respond within about 60 seconds, the watch automatically calls emergency services and sends your location to your emergency contacts. Emergency SOS lets you manually call 911 with a button press, even if you cannot speak.
Fall Detection is available on Apple Watch Series 4 and later. It is automatically enabled for people who set up their age as 55 or older in the Health app. For users under 55, it must be manually turned on.
These features require the watch to have cellular service or be connected to your iPhone's Bluetooth. If your Apple Watch is a GPS-only model (without cellular), it must stay within Bluetooth range of your iPhone to make emergency calls. GPS + Cellular models can call 911 on their own.
Your emergency contacts receive a text message with your location whenever Emergency SOS or Fall Detection activates. Setting up medical ID and emergency contacts in the Health app is an important step that takes just a few minutes.
Many families buy an Apple Watch specifically for these features. A parent or grandparent wearing the watch has a direct line to emergency services and a way for family to be alerted — without needing to do anything in the moment.
