How to Set Up Apple Watch Fall Detection and Emergency SOS

Apple Watch can detect a hard fall and automatically call 911 if you are unresponsive. Here's how to enable this potentially lifesaving feature.

    1

Add Emergency Contacts in the Health App

    ~21s
On your iPhone, open the Health app. Tap your profile photo in the top right. Tap "Medical ID." Tap "Edit" and scroll to "Emergency Contacts." Tap the "+" button to add a contact — choose someone from your contacts list. Select their relationship. Tap "Done."

    Quick Tip

Add two emergency contacts if possible — a family member and a close friend.

    2

Enable Fall Detection on Apple Watch

    ~18s
On your iPhone, open the Watch app. Tap "Emergency SOS." Toggle on "Fall Detection." The watch now monitors your movements and will respond to hard falls.

    Warning

Fall Detection may activate during intense exercise like skiing or cycling. If you get a false alert, tap "I'm OK" immediately to cancel the emergency call.

    3

    Test the Emergency SOS Button

    ~24s
On your Apple Watch, press and hold the side button (the long button on the right side, not the Digital Crown). After a few seconds, a slider appears for "Emergency SOS." Slide it to call 911. To cancel a test, release the button and do not slide.

    Quick Tip

You can also trigger Emergency SOS by pressing and holding the side button until the countdown ends — the call to 911 starts automatically.

    4

    Set Up Medical ID

    ~20s
In the Health app on iPhone, tap your profile → Medical IDEdit. Add your date of birth, blood type, allergies, medications, and medical conditions. First responders can view this information on your locked iPhone or Apple Watch without needing your password.

    Quick Tip

Check the "Show When Locked" toggle to make your Medical ID accessible from the lock screen.

    5

Know What Happens After a Fall

    ~21s
If Apple Watch detects a hard fall and you do not move for about 30 seconds, it taps your wrist and sounds an alarm. You can tap "I'm OK" to dismiss it. If you do not respond within 60 seconds, the watch calls emergency services, plays a recorded message explaining the situation, and sends your GPS location to your emergency contacts.

Apple Watch has two powerful safety features that can make a real difference in an emergency: Fall Detection and Emergency SOS. Fall Detection uses the watch's sensors to recognize the motion pattern of a hard fall. If it detects a fall and you do not respond within about 60 seconds, the watch automatically calls emergency services and sends your location to your emergency contacts. Emergency SOS lets you manually call 911 with a button press, even if you cannot speak.

Fall Detection is available on Apple Watch Series 4 and later. It is automatically enabled for people who set up their age as 55 or older in the Health app. For users under 55, it must be manually turned on.

These features require the watch to have cellular service or be connected to your iPhone's Bluetooth. If your Apple Watch is a GPS-only model (without cellular), it must stay within Bluetooth range of your iPhone to make emergency calls. GPS + Cellular models can call 911 on their own.

Your emergency contacts receive a text message with your location whenever Emergency SOS or Fall Detection activates. Setting up medical ID and emergency contacts in the Health app is an important step that takes just a few minutes.

Many families buy an Apple Watch specifically for these features. A parent or grandparent wearing the watch has a direct line to emergency services and a way for family to be alerted — without needing to do anything in the moment.
