Android phones have several built-in translation tools powered by Google Translate. You can translate typed text, spoken words, or even text inside a photo — useful for menus, signs, and documents in a foreign language.
Google Translate app
: The main translation tool. Available in the Play Store and pre-installed on many Android phones. It supports translation between 130+ languages, voice translation, camera translation (point your phone at text to see an overlay translation), and Conversation mode where two people speak different languages.
Gboard (Google Keyboard) translation
: The default Android keyboard has a built-in translate button. While typing in any app, tap the translate icon in the keyboard to translate what you have typed or the text in the message box before sending.
Select to Translate
: On many Android phones, when you select (highlight) text in any app, a "Translate" option appears in the context menu. Tap it for an instant translation without opening a separate app.
Tap to Translate
: In Google Translate settings, enable "Tap to Translate." After copying any text anywhere on your phone, a small translate button appears. Tap it to translate the copied text immediately.
Google Translate's camera feature is particularly useful for older adults dealing with foreign language mail, prescription instructions from another language, or restaurant menus when traveling.
