How to Use Split Screen on Android to View Two Apps at Once

Android lets you run two apps side by side — perfect for reading an article while texting, or watching video while browsing. Here's how.

    1

    Open the First App

    ~15s
Start the first app you want to use — for example, open your Messages app. Make sure the app is fully loaded before starting split screen.
    2

    Access Recent Apps

    ~15s
Tap the Recent Apps button at the bottom of your screen (looks like a square or three vertical lines). If you use gesture navigation, swipe up from the bottom and hold briefly until the Recent Apps screen appears.
    3

Enable Split Screen for the First App

    ~19s
In Recent Apps, find the app you want on top. Tap and hold its app icon (at the top of the app preview card). A menu appears — tap "Split screen" or "Open in split screen view."

    Quick Tip

On Samsung phones, look for a Split Screen icon that looks like two rectangles stacked on each other.

    4

    Choose the Second App

    ~20s
After selecting split screen, your phone shows recent apps in the bottom half. Tap the second app you want to open. Both apps now run simultaneously — one on top and one on the bottom.

    Warning

If the second app you want is not in Recent Apps, tap "All apps" or go to your home screen and tap the app from there.

    5

    Resize or Exit Split Screen

    ~16s
Drag the divider line between the two apps up or down to give more space to one app. To exit split screen, drag the divider all the way to the top or bottom edge of the screen, or tap the full-screen button on either app.

Split screen is one of Android's most underused features. It lets you run two apps simultaneously — one on the top half of your screen and one on the bottom. This is especially handy when you want to look up something while staying in another app, or follow recipe steps while watching a video.

Android has supported split screen since version 7, but the way you activate it has changed across different phone brands. This guide covers the most common methods so it works regardless of whether you have a Samsung, Pixel, Motorola, or other Android phone.

The most reliable way to activate split screen is through the Recent Apps view — the screen that shows all your open apps. From there, you can tell Android which two apps to display at once.

Split screen works best on larger phones. On a standard-sized phone (6 inches or smaller), each app gets only half the screen, which can feel cramped for some apps. On tablets and larger phones (6.5 inches and up), split screen is much more comfortable.

Not all apps support split screen. Most Google apps, messaging apps, and browsers do. Some games and certain streaming apps may refuse to run in split screen mode.

When you're done multitasking, merging back to a single app takes one second. This feature is worth learning — once you get used to it, going back to one app at a time feels limiting.
