    1

    Enable one-handed mode in Settings

    ~23s
Go to your phone's Settings app. Then: On Google Pixel, tap System > Gestures > One-Handed Mode. On Samsung Galaxy, tap Advanced Features > One-Handed Mode. On other Android phones, try searching "one-handed" in the Settings search bar. Toggle the feature on.

    Quick Tip

If you can't find it in Settings, your phone may use a different name. Try searching for "Reachability" or "One-hand operation" in your phone's settings search bar.

    2

    Choose how to activate it

    ~15s
Most phones let you activate one-handed mode by swiping down on the bottom edge of the screen or by a gesture in the navigation bar. Choose the activation method that feels most natural for how you hold your phone.
    3

    Try it out

    ~15s
Open any app — your home screen works well for practice. Perform the activation gesture you chose. The screen content should shift down and shrink. You can now tap any app icon or button with your thumb without stretching.
    4

Move the shrunken screen left or right

    ~17s
Some phones let you tap arrows on the side of the shrunken screen to shift it left or right — handy if you switch between holding the phone in your left or right hand. Look for directional arrows on the edge of the shrunken display area.
    5

    Exit one-handed mode

    ~15s
Tap the empty dark area above the shrunken screen to return to full view. On some phones, there's a small X button at the top of the shrunken area. On others, one-handed mode exits automatically after a few seconds of inactivity.

Modern Android phones have grown quite large, and reaching the top of the screen with just one thumb can be a stretch. One-handed mode solves this by shrinking the active screen area down to the lower portion of the display, so buttons and links are within comfortable reach when you're holding the phone with a single hand.

This feature is available on most Android phones, though the way you activate it and where the setting lives varies by manufacturer. On Google Pixel phones, it's in Settings > System > One-Handed Mode. On Samsung Galaxy devices, it's found in Settings > Advanced Features > One-Handed Mode. Other Android brands typically have it under Accessibility or Display settings.

Once enabled, you activate one-handed mode in real time by swiping down on the bottom edge of the screen (on many phones) or by double-tapping the home button area. The screen content shifts down to fill only the bottom half or two-thirds of the display, and you can move it to the left or right side depending on which hand you're using.

Tap anywhere in the empty upper area to return to full-screen mode, or tap the X button if one appears. You can also just use the phone normally in apps and it will usually exit one-handed mode automatically.

One-handed mode is especially helpful when you're carrying something in the other hand, using public transportation, or have limited mobility in one hand. It doesn't affect the way apps work — it just shifts where on the screen everything appears.
