How to Find or Erase a Lost Android Phone Using Find My Device

Google's Find My Device lets you locate, lock, or erase a lost Android phone remotely — before someone else can access your personal information.

    1

Verify Find My Device Is Enabled

    ~21s
On your Android phone, go to SettingsSecurityFind My Device. Make sure the toggle is on. Also go to Settings → Location and confirm Location is enabled. Both must be on for Find My Device to work.

    Quick Tip

Also check that your phone is signed in to your Google account: SettingsGoogle → your account name should appear.

    2

Locate Your Phone from a Computer

    ~17s
On any computer or tablet, go to android.com/find in a browser. Sign in with the same Google account that is on your phone. After a moment, your phone's location appears on a map. The map shows street-level detail and updates in real time if the phone is online.
    3

Play a Sound to Find a Nearby Phone

    ~18s
In the Find My Device interface, click or tap "Play sound." Your phone rings at full volume for 5 minutes — even if it is set to silent or vibrate. Listen carefully to locate it in your home. Tap the notification on your phone to stop the sound.
    4

    Lock the Phone Remotely

    ~17s
Click "Secure device" in Find My Device. Enter a new PIN (choose one you will remember), an optional recovery message, and a contact phone number to display on the lock screen. Tap "Secure." Anyone who finds the phone sees your message and cannot access the phone without the new PIN.
    5

Erase the Phone as a Last Resort

    ~25s
Click "Erase device" only if you are certain the phone is stolen and you want to protect your data. This permanently deletes everything — contacts, photos, apps, and data. The phone returns to factory settings. Once erased, you can no longer track it with Find My Device.

    Warning

Remote erase cannot be undone. Only use it if you are sure the phone is gone and you want to prevent unauthorized access to your personal information.

Google's Find My Device service lets you locate your Android phone on a map, play a sound to help you find it nearby, lock it remotely, and erase all data if you believe it is stolen — all from any web browser or another device.

Find My Device is built into all Android phones running Android 4.4 or later. It is enabled by default as long as you are signed in to a Google account on the phone, and the phone is connected to the internet and has location services turned on.

The most common scenario: you cannot find your phone at home. You use another device (a computer or tablet) to go to android.com/find, sign in with your Google account, and see your phone's location on a map. If it is in your house, you can play a loud sound for 5 minutes — even if it is on silent — to hear exactly where it is.

If the phone is truly lost outside your home, the map shows the last known location. If the phone is still on and connected, the location updates in real time. You can then lock the phone with a new PIN that prevents anyone from accessing it, or send a message to the lock screen with a contact number.

The nuclear option — remote erase — permanently deletes everything on the phone. This is appropriate if you believe the phone is stolen and you have given up on recovering it. Note that once you erase remotely, Find My Device no longer works on that device.

Setting up a screen lock PIN or fingerprint is essential for this to matter — without a lock screen, anyone who finds your phone can access everything immediately.
